Jake's schoolwork is failing, mainly due to his double life as the American Dragon. His principal, Ms. Derceto (a paraplegic), wants to talk to his parents, but they're out of town. Jake's current mission is to track down a kelpie, a shape-shifting creature from the ocean that robs magical creatures of their power. After Ms. Derceto comes by to talk to his Grampa, the two of them start dating. Jake notices that kelpie attacks seem to happen whenever Ms. Derceto comes by, and he suspects that she is the kelpie. When he confronts her at her home, she jumps out of her wheelchair and attacks Jake. Jake captures her, but then realizes that she's a mermaid, one of several undercover merpolice that have been looking for the kelpie for a year. She thought Jake was the kelpie, due to the changes in his grades and attitude in the last year. They then realize that Grampa is defenseless against the kelpie, who is disguised as Fu Dog's date. But when they're nominated for homecoming king and queen, Jake and Rose once again toy with being a couple. Meanwhile, the Huntsclan finds the 13th Aztec skull, that will grant one irreversible wish to whoever holds the last skull. Rose (as Huntsgirl) helps Jake retrieve it instead. But in doing so, she is recorded talking with him, revealing that she has betrayed the Huntsclan. The Huntmaster blackmails Rose into helping him get the three skulls that Jake and Grandpa possess, by threatening her long lost parents, that he kidnapped her from after she was born. The skulls must be placed in statues that happen to be at the location of the homecoming dance. After scaring the students away, the Huntsclan begin to set up the skulls to grant wishes. After Jake, Trixie, Spud, and Grandpa battle a magical creature, they discover their contact with the beast has left them drained of their youth. Jake is thrilled because he's now 21 years old and living it up, but Trixie and Spud end up in a retirement home. Jake realizes he'll grow up soon enough and must defeat the beast to restore their youth. An elderly Trixie and Spud try to adjust to life in a magical retirement home.

Jake is being auctioned off for a school bachelor fundraiser, but when he notices that the two contenders are a pretty girl, and a plain looking girl, to Trixie's dismay he manipulates the bidding so the pretty girl wins. But when Gramps fears that this pretty girl is actually a siren bent on his destruction, he and Trixie, Spud, and Fu try to convince Jake he made a bad choice. Trixie accidentally bids on Spud, and must spend a week with him as her bachelor.

When Spud is bitten by a magical frog and begins to develop cool froggy powers, against Jakes advice, he decides to ham it up in front of all the other students and finally enjoy all the perks of being part magical like his best friend. That is, until Huntsclan #88 and #89 come magical frog huntin'.

Jake's loyalty to Fu Dog comes into question when he's assigned a new animal guardian-a totally cool hip-hop helper monkey named Bananas B. But when the evil Dragon Councilor Chang shows up and Bananas B changes sides, Jake realizes loyalty is hard to come by and apologizes to Fu for turning his back on his guardian. Spud feels betrayed after Trixie admits to burying an ugly sweater he gave her for her birthday.

When Rotwood sets Jake up for humiliation at school in an effort to put Jake off balance so he'll hopefully reveal his true dragon self, Jake starts venting on an online blog and unintentionally turns Rotwood into the magical world's public enemy #1. Once Jake discovers that there's a bounty on Rotwood's head, he realizes that he's said too much and has to convince the magical community to give up their quest and return things back to normal - even if Rotwood is still going to give Jake a hard time.

Jake, Spud, and Trixie are hoping for a little rest and relaxation and sign up to be camp counselors at Haley's summer camp. But when a legendary ghost story comes to life, Jake must put his vacation on hold and help all the junior campers face their fears to defeat the ghosts that are trying to steal their souls. Haley competes with a fellow camper for the coveted camp trophy.
