The nurses arrive from Australia to Egypt. Each is prepared for a grand adventure, although some seem to have ideas other than nursing on their minds. However, as the Gallipoli Campaign begins in earnest, all of them must face the harsh reality of war, and of what it means to be an ANZAC Nurse.

Olive and the others begin their work on the Greek Island of Lemnos, caring for the wounded who arrive from the Dardanelles with limited supplies and support from the Australian Army. Elsie fights to be able to provide proper care for Syd in Egypt.

In Egypt, Alice and Elsie are confronted by the heart-wrenching reality of love during wartime, which reaches a breaking point for Elsie when she is forced to choose between her husband, Syd and her role abroad in the AANS. After being seconded to a British hospital in France, the girls come face-to-face with the snobbery of the British nursing staff, inciting them to reflect on their own national identity. Alice struggles to comprehend the news she receives in the wake of an Allied assault in Fromelles. Olive's work at the clearing station brings matters of death, love, and duty to a head. Hilda and a handful of nurses are given the opportunity to work in anaesthetisation, and the arrival of the Croix Rouge leads to the return of a familiar face as another departs.

Alice and Hilda start work at a clearing station close to the Front, and Elsie follows Syd to the Front. Tensions run high as the final push begins, and our nurses face new dangers. But finally, the Great War reaches its close as Armistice is declared, and we discover what became of our ANZAC Girls.
