Simon's latest prank in a series played between him and his brother Evan goes too far when Evan is late for school, but he seems to have forgiven him. He even lets Simon have the first chance to test out a new virtual-reality program both have been waiting to try. But Simon finds himself trapped in a world with an intelligent computer-virus, which has reprogrammed the system so that if Simon doesn't get out of the lifelike setting, where nothing works in his favor, it will take over his brain to attack life outside the computer. Ever since his conductor father's death, Tim has been obsessed with being around real and fake trains. A mysterious conductor named Ray Lawson tries to offer him a railroad watch and delivers a model train to him. This seems to transport Tim aboard a real train with actual people when he sets it up. His friend Cap Anderson reveals that Ray Lawson was a conductor responsible for his train, 713, crashing years before. Cap worries about Tim's gathering some more details about the many deaths that resulted and drives him out, but Tim follows him when he goes looking for Lawson to confront him. He sees Cap taken prisoner on the disappearing train that is doomed to repeat its fatal journey yet another time and must figure out how to board the train himself but stop it crashing so they aren't both killed in Lawson's place.
