The ER is busy with victims of a gang shootout while Carter is late because he's just back from a holiday and stuck in traffic. When he arrives, he can't answer Benton's medical questions, who was already annoyed with Carter because he was late. Mark has his first staff meeting, a new group of third year medical students arrives and Kerry Weaver is made the new chief resident. Meanwhile, the air conditioning doesn't work. It's Weaver's first day and she clashes with Doug, who has his hands full with a young pyromaniac. Carol rides along with paramedics Shep and Raul and Shep shows an interest in Carol. Just like Carter does in med student Harper Tracy. Benton and Jeanie try to hide their affair from the hospital staff and Al, Jeanie's husband. Carter gets his first official patient. Unfortunately, something goes awry. Doug treats a four-year-old Asian boy with AIDS who has been given a deadly combination of medicines. Susan, who has enough trouble as it is with Chloe and little Susie, clashes again with Weaver. Wendy conducts interviews with several ER staff members for an article about Mark. Weaver and Susan still have problems and they even start arguing in front of a patient. Mark has had it and steps in. Meanwhile he's also trying to find a bed for an elderly Jane Doe. Susan tries to find a sitter for little Susie and doesn't want Mark to know Chloe's gone. Susan continues to struggle raising little Suzie on her own. She asks her parents for help, otherwise she see little choice but to put her up for adoption. Doug Ross and med student Harper have a particularly rough day when they twice have to perform a particularly painful procedure on little Chia-Chia who is dying of AIDS. One of the nurses helps prostitute Loretta Sweet dress for a regular job interview. When Benton learns that a frequently battered woman's husband is a police officer, he finds a creative way to deal with the situation. When picking up some papers at Doug's, Mark finds out Doug and Harper had sex that night. Mark gets angry with Doug about this since it could get both of them fired. Harper tells Carter what happened between her and Doug. Meanwhile Jeanie starts at the ER which clearly upsets Benton. Doug accepts an offer to work in a private pediatric practice. After his last ER shift he's on his way to a fund raiser when he gets a flat tire. In the pouring rain a boy comes up to his car because his brother is stuck in a flooded culvert. Doug doesn't hesitate and does everything he possibly can to save the kid. A news TV helicopter films part of the rescue attempt and Doug becomes a local hero. Doug gets the opportunity to stay at the ER thanks to the publicity surrounding his rescue of a drowning boy last week. He will even be given an award. Later, Doug and Mark have a disagreement about two patients and Mark sends Doug home. Shep finds out about Carol's suicide attempt a year earlier and Carter tells Benton something about Jeanie he didn't know. Carter and Harper are trying to find a place where they can make out but continually get disturbed. Jeanie and Carol try to find a place for a schizophrenic patient who's banned from his home. Carol tries to get the ER staff to sing for another ward of the hospital but nobody wants to. Mark is angry with Jennifer for staying in Dayton with Rachel during Christmas and takes care of a Holocaust survivor whose car has been stolen while her grandchild was in it. Weaver gets a visit from a close friend and Benton and Carter get in Vucelich's good book when Carter convinces Jules 'Ruby' Rubadoux to let his wife undergo a new surgery technique Vucelich is studying and experiment with. Shep and Raul enter a house with about a dozen abandoned and undernourished children. They bring them to the ER where they keep the staff busy. Meanwhile, Vucelich lets Carter take care of Mrs. Rubadoux, whose condition doesn't improve and who didn't turn out to be good material for Vucelich's study. Shep clashes with Malik and Benton over a racial remark and Mark gets divorce papers from Jennifer. Jeanie has an evaluation and an appointment with Al. Mark's hesitating about telling Rachel about the divorce but realizes he has to. Rachel meanwhile doesn't like Susan being around when she and Mark go ice-skating. Benton has to attend a banquet at Vucelich's home and, after Carter laughs at the idea of Benton going with his sister Jackie, asks Jeanie to go with him. It's his day off, but that doesn't stop Mark from showing up at work. He gets a patient with heart problems who dies and an insecure Mark thinks it might be his fault. Later on, Morgenstern and a lawyer want to talk to Mark about the O'Brien case of the year before. Harper finds a patient for Vucelich's study and tells Carter but he omits to tell Vucelich and Benton it was Harper who found the patient instead of him. After Vucelich tells Benton the patient wasn't suited for the study, Benton starts to doubt Vucelich's study. Carol takes care of a lady who has with her a bucket of worms while Doug has a kid who's medically fine, but does have some other problems that need to be talked about. Rumours abound that Susan Lewis and Mark Greene are now a couple after Carter sees them on the train early one morning. It's Doug Ross' birthday and his father visits him at the hospital. Ross also has to treat a group of 7 year-olds who were bitten at a petting zoo. Dr. Benton approaches Dr. Vucelich about his concerns over the surgical study and suddenly finds himself off the research team. Benton feels he's not taken seriously ever since the Vucelich debacle and when a man who jumped in front of the metro after a bad Valentine's day comes in, he does everything he can to save him - even though all the other surgeons agree it's a hopeless case. Carter has an important interview, Doug goes to see his father and Jerry tries to convince everybody basketball player Scottie Pippen visited the ER. Shep and Raul get a call about a burning house and are the first ones on the scene. When they find out there are three children inside, Shep goes in, ignoring the fact they don't have the proper equipment. At the ER victims of the fire keep coming in and when somebody says Shep and Raul where there first, everybody starts worrying about their fate, especially Carol. Just after Jerry spoiled a surprise Carter had for Harper, a guy (Dale) runs up to Harper. Dale turns out to be an old friend of Harper who she was intimate with once and he's also the new surgical resident-in-training. Carter gets desperately competitive with Dale after he learns Dale has already done procedures he hasn't. Susan has an appointment regarding the custody of little Susie. Benton makes a mistake by sending somebody home who should be admitted and finds that some surgeons don't want to work with him anymore because of the incident with Doug some days ago. Susan doesn't want to think about the fact Chloe gets custody of little Susie and wholly absorbs herself in her work. Which gains recognition from Kerry and Mark, who are thinking about who could be next year's chief resident. Kerry meanwhile hopes she'll be chosen Resident of the Year. To be able to graduate, Carter has to do a pediatric rotation. He'll have to help Doug out the next couple of weeks. Doug in the meantime takes on with Karen, who his father has also taken on with. Shep gets more and more aggressive and shoves a boy interfering with his work. The boy ends up in the ER. Mark and Jennifer have agreed to talk about their divorce. Susan isn't over the fact she lost little Susie and consults a therapist. At work a baby is brought in and Kerry thinks Susan can't handle the situation and takes over. Al, Jeanie's ex-husband, comes in and Jeanie fears he might be seriously ill. Karen tells Doug his father has run off with her money and realizes the money his father gave him is actually hers. Mark Greene strikes a deal with Kerry Weaver - he will support her application for an ER attending position if she in turn will support Susan Lewis for Chief Resident. When Susan doesn't get the job, Mark is told to go ask her why. Carter is finally going to graduate and wants Benton to attend the party his family is throwing for him. Unfortunately, Carter decides to sit with a young patient awaiting a liver transplant and misses his own graduation ceremony. With the news she has received about her former husband Al's health, Jeanie Boulet decides to have herself tested. Doug Ross' girlfriend Karen forges his prescription for percodan. Hathaway's boyfriend, Shep, is refusing to undergo his anger management treatment. Mark's ex-wife Jen tells him that she is going to re-marry.
