Spin off series of The Walking Dead that portrays the beginning events of the zombie apocalypse in the West coast during the same time frame when the city of Atlanta was falling under attack, while Rick was in a coma at the local hospital. It shows how the strain was already in full effect in the south while it's just starting in California.

Nick brings his family to Strand's yacht in an inflatable rescue boat. Chris grieves his mother and blames Travis for shooting her. Meanwhile Alicia uses the radio and makes contact with a stranger called Jack despite the warning of Strand. Out of the blue, Strand finds that a speed boat is coming in the direction of his boat. Meanwhile Nick finds poison in Harry's room and he believes George is planning to kill his family to stay together in the island. Alicia recognizes the voice of Jack and he protects her from his violent partners Reed and Vida. Travis is forced to start the dead ship while the leader of the invaders Connor comes on board. In a cabin of Abigail, Daniel cleans the wound of Reed that is tied up to a chair and brags and threatens Chris and Daniel. When Daniel leaves the cabin, Chris offers to look out for Reed. Meanwhile Madison heads the Abigail to the shipyard where Alicia and Travis are captive and she proposes a trade to Connor: her family per his young brother. Travis has a conversation with Chris about his attitude killing the hostage; however the group needs to hide since two Mexican marines go on board of Abigail. There is a shooting and Luis and one marine die. The group arrives at the Mexican coast and they are attacked by people from a church. Madison is attacked by a zombie and Chris does not protect her but Alicia saves her mother. Strand drives a truck with the group to Abigail's property and they have to give their weapons to the residents since the place is protected has by fence and a gate. When Alicia confronts Chris about his behavior, he threatens her and she tells Madison what happened. Strand finds that Abigail was bitten by a zombie and makes a suicide pact with him. Meanwhile Daniel finds a barn crowded of zombies kept by the mysterious Celia and she explains that they are family and friends. Is the group really safe in the real estate? Then he is assigned to go with Luciana to a supermarket controlled by drug-dealers to bring water and some supplies. Then he learns that Alejandro was bitten by a zombie and survived, and has found a sort of religion that worship the dead. Meanwhile Strand, Madison, Alicia and Ofelia finds that Abigail is gone. They seek shelter in a huge hotel and while Alicia and Ofelia scavenge the rooms for food and supplies, Madison and Strand get drunken. Out of the blue, they discover that they are not alone. Travis is walking with Chris and they find a car. While Travis fix the car, Chris goes to a restaurant to scavenge water and supplies. He overhears voices, finds a can of beans and water and kills a zombie, saving the life of a young man. Then he runs to the car and he flees with Travis. When they run out of gas, they decide to spend the night in the wilderness. During the night, three young men arrive and invite Chris and Travis to eat with them. On the next morning, Chris and Travis travel with the group to the next town; however Chris sees a farm and they stop to seek supplies. Travis suggests Chris to stay with him in the farm but he refuses. Then something happens. Meanwhile Alicia can not find Ofelia but meets Elena, a former employee of the hotel that locked dozens of guests in a room with infected to save the other guests in the hotel. In flashback, it is shown how Madison and Strand fled from the zombies. Then Alicia joins them and they team up with Elena and Hector. Madison and Strand look for Oscar and they propose to clean the hotel from the zombies and make the place home. However the mother of the bride, Ilene, does not want Elena with them. Madison plots a plan to get rid off the zombies. Meanwhile Nick uses a few OxyContin pills to dilute with other substances and increase the quantity to lure the drug dealers. He also learns that Alejandr was really bitten by an infected and has survived. In return, Alejandro gives a house to Nick and he receives a visit during the night. At the hotel, Ilene surprisingly stabs Strand in the belly and Madison, Elena and a man from Hector's group drive to the drug dealers' headquarter to get medical supplies to Strand. Nick unsuccessfully tries to convince Luciana to leave the colony with him before the attack of the gang. Brandon and Derek seek shelter in the hotel compound and Madison learns that Chris died.
