Brian enjoys dating his 'ex who got away', even going well after his brilliancy drug wears off, but reconsiders when the senator's sinister enforcer demands blind loyalty, threatening they can get at all Brian's loved ones. His woes soon worsen when evidence points to him murdering a former colleague who made a personal fortune from their work. As Brian sifts though five inheriting charities and six disgruntled heirs for the true culprit, Sands burdens him further with the treasonous task of copying the FBI's secured files on NZT, a task he's strongly compelled not to ignore. When a hunt for a meth lab becomes a hunt for terrorists targeting New York City with a dirty bomb, Brian collides and bonds with a concerned lad who doesn't realize his older brother's been recruited. Meanwhile, Brian struggles with video messages left to himself from Pill Brian, warning against sharing with Rebecca what he's learned about her late father's deeper connection to NZT. With Rebecca unexpectedly pulled away into an FBI war game, the side-effects worsen, with the next inoculation withheld till Brian carries out a new assignment: discredit Rebecca. As Boyle feigns to conspire with interim leader ADIC Grady Johnson to continue the hunt, Brian and Rebecca (in hiding) resolve to get Naz off the hook but find she's technically guilty, paying a shady intermediary for the safe return of her teen daughter Ava's kidnapped cousin Mitra, taken by South China Sea pirates. Tapping into his secret pill stash, Brian learns every language in the region to identify, contact, and deal with the current kidnappers (pirates who've pirated other pirates for the cousin). Under NZT, Brian offers to capture the FBI's Ten Most Wanted criminals in two weeks in exchange for Naz giving him his own personal work headquarters at the agency. Under her reluctant agreement, Brian assigns various agents tasks while willing himself into developing a new felon-hunting technique through NZT - synesthesia, the ability to see fragrances and odors - but a snag develops when he finds one fugitive unlikely of his crime. To clear him expediently would take dosing him with NZT, but could the FBI ever agree to that? Brian's bodyguards go to the NZT dispensary to pick up his daily dose and find a break in, with the thief still there. A shootout breaks out, but the perp escapes with his haul. With Brian's help they figure out where they can find the drugs, but a large amount of the NZT disappear between the drug bust and the FBI. Who took it and what will they do with it?

A remarkable assassination attempt on Sen. Morra sends Sands to summon the FBI directly, but his primary mission is to alert Brian of the need to keep the investigation from rightfully naming Piper Baird as the assassin, as her ties will ultimately reveal Morra's secret connection to NZT. Piper, on the other hand, aims to draw fellow NZT user Brian to her cause of ending Sen.
