Ben and Leanne go on vacation and meet up with Leanne's college girlfriends. Murder ensues, Ben defends a stranger while Leanne suspects one of her friends is the real killer.

Ben finds out that a man is being charged with murder who has a connection to Ben's father Charlie.

In the stable on their property, Mike Wilson and his wife have a minor argument over an anonymous letter. She pushes past him in leaving the barn, and he falls and hits his head. When he tries to get up he's struck by someone holding a shovel, and dies. His wife is accused of his death, and he appears as a friendly ghost to Ben Matlock to beg him to help his wife, who won't defend herself since she thinks it truly is her fault. A lawyer is accused of murdering his lover and her husband, a high school football coach and aspiring minister.

An old friend of Ben's asks him to look into the death of his daughter, a talented pianist, who supposedly had committed suicide. After checking into what happened, Ben believes that she was in fact murdered. Ben initially welcomes Billy's brother Russ to stay with him until he realizes he's a bigger pain than Billy ever was.
