The grizzly public death of a girl in a tampered guillotine act calls Phryne to the scene. Phryne's old flame, Group Captain Lyle Compton of R.A.A.F. Victorian Command Headquarters, Base 19, calls in Phryne to discretely investigate a sabotaged plane and a missing pilot. Det John Robinson interrupts with news of a woman found dead at the perimeter fence. Lyle denies any connection to his base. Phryne and Jack investigate, nonetheless, but Dot and Phryne's nearness to a concentration of fit, masculine men unsettles both Jack and Hugh, especially as Lyle and Phryne reminisce old times. Aunt Prudence, in gratitude to Dr Samuels for helping her through the death of son Arthur, avails her home as temporary consulting rooms, only for it to quickly mushroom into a sanatorium for rich women. Chief among the modern treatments, a vaginal vibrator, which electrocutes one of the patients. The deliberately frayed wire points to murder. With Dr Samuels (who only targets rich women) as the prime suspect, Jack helps Phryne sift through a morass of details. The Grand Hotel has most certainly seen better days, especially now that its concierge has been forcibly shoved from its rooftop. Phryne's reluctance to investigate rests entirely on of fact of her untrustworthy father Henry being one of the guests (whom she handsomely paid to be well on his way back to England). Phryne hosts a tennis tournament at her aunt's estate. One of her old girlfriends, tennis champion Constance Burrows, cuts short her honeymoon to compete. Her new husband, Stanley, coaches his new wife. Hugh finally returns, having a reconciled family, a promotion and a happy fiancée to show for it. Vengeance is the order of the day as the hospitalized killer from The Grand Hotel case escapes his police guard in obsessed, continued pursuit of Baron Henry Fisher. The escape coincides with the murder of prize-winning scientist Quentin Tode, felled by a difficult-to-identify poison. The two incidents appear strongly connected, but as Phryne figuratively sprints non-stop to protect her father's life, Dot and Hugh contend with Father O'Leary, whose caustic Irish nature makes him an astonishing prime suspect in the killing, and a formidable stumbling block (even out of jail) in the couples' marriage plans.In the same time Phryne and Jack continues their relationship and recognize their feelings for eachother.
