A bomb explodes as Ziva passes; she stops and challenges a pedestrian, who is a former teammate, Eschel, whom she allows to walk away. Ziva goes to the Mossad in Washington; Eschel is officially dead, but he now acts independently; with the bomb he killed a Syrian informant, whom the Israelis want, along with two FBI bodyguards. The Mossad tries to hold Ziva, but she escapes. The FBI issues a warrant for Ziva for espionage and murder, and the FBI takes over the case. With Abby's help, Ziva calls Gibbs in retirement in Mexico; Tony, McGee, Ducky, Abby, and Palmer form a secret pact to help Ziva; Gibbs returns to Washington. Gibbs and Tony agree that Eschel set up Ziva; Gibbs and Ziva investigate in the field; the FBI gets first a tip and then a surprise. The body is that of a lance corporal stationed at Quantico; he disappeared six months before, when his unit went to Iraq. The team believe that the body had been buried (directly into the ground) and exhumed; McGee finds the place. Gibbs loses something, and the team find two fiancées; the two meet, and they vigorously exchange views. Abby gets two good surprises, Palmer engages in deception, and Lee goes undercover. McGee gives good directions. The team figure it out, and they find not only the bad guys but also a bunch of girls. McGee learns that 10 kilos of a deadly gas are missing; Sharif, the bomber from the golf course, calls Gibbs about the gas. Gibbs and Hollis confer; Ziva likes a guy and gives him some data, then he winds up in Gibbs's chat room. Tony and Ziva tail Harrow, a retired puzzle maker; he spots them, he runs, they pursue, and he collapses and dies with a heart attack. Jen wants to catch the Frog, another dealer, who expects to meet Harrow, but Harrow has died, so the gang disguise Ducky as Harrow, a Brit, and coach him; they send Ducky to make the exchange, and the gang and the director go with him but stay in the background. Tony identifies the victim's last date; Gibbs suspects that they deal with a serial killer. A Navy lieutenant, a member of an international nuclear-inspection agency, approaches Gibbs and asks him to solve the officer's own murder; because of his symptoms he knows that someone has exposed him to unknown nuclear radiation; Gibbs and company undertake the case. Abby and Ducky start figuring it out, and Ziva sticks with the subject, whose condition grows worse as though the exposure to the radiation poisoning continues. McGee finds not a smoking gun but rather a smoking cigar; Ducky explains the significance of it. Gibbs and McGee figure out the bad actor, then they change the travel plans for that person. Abby, in a lousy mood, says that the parts are from five different people. Gibbs and Hollis open two more crypts and find more parts. Gibbs and company investigate a crime scene at the rented home of a Navy petty officer, Cove, in Norfolk, Virginia; while doing so McGee recognizes that certain key details duplicate details, including a highly unusual cocktail, in his second novel, still unfinished and in process. Cove and his pickup truck have disappeared, and his truck has since become found. The gang search McGee's rough draft, and they trace the movements of one of its characters; at one of the sites in the book, they find two bodies, one of which is Cove's, and the other of which matches another character. Jen summons most of the gang back to the shop on a Friday night; Gibbs gives McGee an unusual assignment, and he finishes it; Abby gets a surprising fingerprint match.
