After a series of 'accidents' he rightly assumes to constitute attempts at his life, merciless TV talent show 'American Duos' key judge Nigel St. Nigel refuses to let security compromise the production, which happens to be in Santa Barbara this week, so he hires Shawn as psychic watchdog, going undercover as contestant with Gus. Near-fatal incidents continue, so obnoxious prima donna Nigel gets to stay at highly unamused Henry's home. Shawn and Gus start fearing they're becoming superfluous to the SBPD as Lassiter keeps solving cases without 'psychic' help, nine already. When a corpse washes up the coast, he's clueless while only Shawn dares diagnose the fatal wounds as T-Rex bites, but the police detective is on their tail. The victim turns out to be a paleontology professor in need of a spectacular find to prevent his tiny department being shut down. Shawn and the SBPD are eager to solve dollar counterfeit case, but the Treasury has jurisdiction and sends cocky special agent Lars Ewing, irresistible in Juliet's eyes, who brings his trusted 'psychic', Lindsay Leikin, equally to Lassiter's taste. Only Shawn confidently sets out to prove Leikin, who promises the inverse, a fraud. While formally cooperating, both teams rival in a race to beat the other. Lassiter's embarrassment about his own police car being stolen while parked in front of the precinct gives priority focus to the wave of classy car thefts to sell off the parts. Shawn quickly traces it to a car shop owner, who is swiftly jailed. yet Shawn senses that's not the whole story, even before the car shop owner is murdered in his repair pit. Moody newspaper food critic Wagner was poisoned with wild mushrooms. To impress Gus's visiting uncle Burton, Shawn allows an apparent role switch, which means he must cue his clueless partner unnoticed, but hopes to get payment in kind. The city suffers a wave of robberies, which Lassiter fails to solve. The police chief still assigns Shawn to her priority, finding a nanny as her baby keeps her agonizingly awake all night. Shawn largely passes that to Gus, snoops about the robberies and soon suspects a link. The case moves into prominence after a murder. Murder suspect Dwayne Tancana escapes while Juliet guards him to the courthouse. Shawn accepts to track him down before ruthless bounty hunter Byrd Tatums. The detectives are hired by a wealthy family whose daughter Mira Gaffney, Gus's first love, reports her groom missing the day before their wedding at the family's Napa valley wine estate. Shawn discovers secrets at both groom and bride's side, including identity scam, and rewrites Gus's love life. Psych is hired by a rest home orderly for semi-able seniors to examine a series of resident fatalities which the police dismisses as non-suspicious accidents. Lacking full access, Shawn tricks his wager-eager father into being admitted as demented grandfather. While Henry has a blast, Shawn soon comes up with surprising motives, suspects and methods. Spanish-language Californian soap star Jorge Gama-Lobo, a Mexican, hires Psych to prove he didn't murder a fellow actor with a studio-made fake knife. Lassiter considers the film recording conclusive, but Shawn assesses Jorge's surprise genuine and gets the police chief to call him in. Snooping on director Lance's set, Shawn gets hired instead of a hopeless actor. Thus he gets access to the soap's internal politics as well as fan attention and sets a trap on air. Arthur Holmstrom, recently chair-promoted treasurer of the local, Freemason-style charitable Monarch Lodge, is knife-murdered in his club HQ office. Detective Lassiter, a member, and president Irving Parker, his soon-ex's father, ask Shawn and his unamused father Henry, a former member, to solve the case discretely. Gus enjoys approaching the exclusive membership, including many prospective medical clients, and thus contributes suspicious observations to a plot of black books and deadly ambition. Psych is hired to look into the murder of a co-founder of the Ciabella fashion house. While they are undercover as male models, which Shawn does quite well, the other founder suffers the same fate. Shawn is as delighted to get the case of a theft from a bizarre museum as Gus is terrified because the loot is his childhood nightmare: an Egyptian mummy. Meanwhile the precinct is self-absorbed, due the expiration the commissioner's ultimatum to resign unless nominated permanently, yet can't ignore the high-profile murder of tycoon, a major sponsor of the museum, whose board includes his heir William Wyles IV.
