It works but people bicker over the exchange value of goods and services, so the next step is a fake currency, 'Burt bucks'. Jimmy finds himself the easy victim of the supermarket's reinstated ex-con clerk and Sabrina's attempts to restore her humiliated husband's confidence keep backfiring. When Jimmy finds out his parents never took him on a real holiday but faked cook travel adventures in town while he was a sleepy kid, well-traveled Sabrina resolves to take him and Hope along for the real thing. The Chance parents are tempted to join against better judgment, even with maw-maw, lured by a sweet deal to deliver a yacht, which turns out worse then a drag, under contract. Jimmy used to get humiliated whenever he believed to have some artistic talent, so his parents always played it down in advance. Now Sabrina pushes him to try his hand as a modern painter after Howdie's is taken over by reputedly innovative nut-case investor Maxine, who demands all supermarket staff to come up with ideas and fires Howard as soon as he objects to absurd experiments. However he's defending a murder-suspect and decides he needs to counter he prosecutor's flashy co-counsels with his own 'lookers', and decides to hire Burt and Virginia for the part, which ultimately gets extended to standing in, despite ignorance concerning penal law and procedure. The Chances are used to lame freaks as back neighbors, but the new couple is different. Virginia takes an instant liking to macho Gary, agreeing to keep mysterious packages for him. Burt makes a bad fall, landing him in a wheelchair, and is instantly suspicious, claiming Gary, who forces him to a humiliating thumb war, abuses his wife, even ax-murders her, but the police deputizes Barney as auxiliary officer as only response to the Chances, who exceeded the quota of loony calls. Burt however finds, like all predecessors, including barney, that interim mayor 'opportunities' are traps to do the incumbent's dirty work, in this case canceling this year's Christmas festivities to save money needed for the public swimming pool. Maw Maw accidentally calls a wrong number in her contact book, bringing Virginia's cousin, Delilah, back to town. When the two rivals fight nonstop, Maw Maw threatens to give everything in her will to the granddaughter who can act the most civil.
