As Olivia nears the end of her pregnancy, Jasper's eccentric and bohemian family comes to Avonlea to help look after the baby once it arrives. Jasper was expecting two people at most, but several dozen of his family descend on the town. Because of a recent fire at the blacksmith shop, many of the townsfolk, led by Alec and Clive, believe that it's time that Avonlea created its own volunteer fire department. Most of the townsfolk agree, and even provide spare equipment lying around in their respective barns to get things going. But as the men begin training, there is an obvious clash between Alec and Clive. Although he doesn't yet know him well, Alec doesn't seem to like Clive, period. Alec admits that much of that feeling is based on Clive spending so much time with Hetty. Alec is concerned that the ever worldly Clive is taking advantage of his sister. As the fire department gets rolling, they go through some growing pains, which leads to the need to elect a fire chief, the obvious candidates being Alec and Clive. After his arrival, he captures everyone's imagination as a larger than life but still seemingly kind, courageous and thoughtful figure. The person surprisingly most enthralled is Sara. With Felicity's assistance, Sara plots to attract Marshal Morgan's attention as a woman. He does take a liking to Sara - especially since she is training for the show's horse riding competition - but not quite as she wants. But Marshal Morgan is not blind, and he understands that Sara has a crush on him. He has to figure out what to do without hurting her. Despite being emotionally distraught being all alone in the world without finances of her own, Evelyn realizes that she has to do whatever she needs to to continue on with her and Carrie's life. Felix can do so because Alec has absolved him of all his chores at the farm since Alec has given up on Felix, who could barely remember what his chores were let alone do them. Beyond getting paid to do work, Felix likes much about his new job, especially the fact that Mr. Tremayne treats him like a responsible person. What Felix doesn't like about the job is that he is in the middle in the battles between Mr. Tremayne and the rest of the staff, including his friend Gus. Meanwhile, the Duke of Arranagh is on Prince Edward Island, visiting many communities on his official rounds. Hetty, having a case of writer's block on her latest romantic story, feels that she needs to observe people to make her story come to life. So she makes Simon Tremayne, the manager of the hotel, a proposition: she will invest in the hotel (needing an influx of cash for renovations and repairs) in return for her being allowed to observe the hotel guests directly. Mr. Tremayne, feeling desperate for money, agrees. He may regret this decision as Hetty's observation turn to interference. Mr. Tremayne comes to another agreement with her, one he hopes will solve both his problems. Another plan that he has is to have a Valentine's Day dance at the hotel. Gus asks Felicity to the dance, an invitation that she enthusiastically accepts. However, Arthur Pettibone has returned from veterinary school, he who also wants to take Felicity to the dance. She has two suitors from which to choose, Gus and Arthur. Although Sara is hoping that Felicity will ultimately choose Gus, Sara also does not believe that Felicity, in stringing both Gus and Arthur along, is treating either fairly. Gus asks Sara for help in this matter, but Sara's involvement ends up causing strained relations between all four. But a declaration by one of the two suitors may make things more clear for Felicity. Another important factor is the basic characteristic of the two polar opposite men, Gus who has an old fashioned view of life, and Arthur who has a more modern outlook, one at odds with his ex-military father. To realize his vision, he needs to purchase several properties, including a small portion of the King farm. The entire proposal divides the townsfolk. It also divides the King family, especially selling part of their family property. Hetty, the most vocal opponent, wants to outbid Harold Dunn for any of the properties, including the cannery, to retain the rural lifestyle she knows to be Avonlea, but many doubt she has the necessary funds to outbid him. Meanwhile, Sara wants to use part of her vast trust to buy Jasper a motion picture camera, something he would not be able to do himself since he and Olivia are in financial straits.
