It's a week before Adam's sixteenth birthday, and while he is focused on getting his driver's license, Cathy is focused on organizing a party for him, whether or not he wants one and despite her fatigue from recent chemotherapy treatments to remove the bits of the tumor the surgery could not remove. It's November, two months after Cathy quit her job and decided to go off chemotherapy. She's feeling great, with one small bump of losing feeling in one of her legs, the paralysis due to the tumor pressing on her brain. In feeling great, Cathy wants to get all her affairs in order, which includes one major issue concerning Paul. Cathy's therapist warns her, however, that life may throw her a curve ball, and she just has to be prepared for that ball not to hit her in the face. Paul, away in Detroit on his next speaking engagement, comes to a realization of his own about his life with Cathy, which may not mesh with her plans. Adam's tutoring sessions with Lydia don't seem to be helping enough for him to pass his chemistry exam and thus the class. As such, Adam proposes a scheme to her, which she in turn modifies leading to Adam being the one who has to make the decision on whether or not to proceed with the less than ethical scheme. Sean is growing a beard, which is at a scraggly stage,... Written by Huggo

It's January, and Cathy isn't doing well, now on routine pain medication and the tumors growing bigger. Rather than lean on her family, she decides to go into the hospice, which her family believes is her giving up, she trying to assure them that she isn't in an unusual way. An incident with her hospice roommate Nan shows Cathy that she isn't ready to die yet. Visions Cathy sees at the hospice may make death closer than she wants. With Cathy no longer at home, a question becomes how Paul and Adam will cope in this early stage without her. With a match found, Sean reconsiders his decision to donate a kidney. Bethany, the hospice therapy cat, may give Sean a better sense if he should go through with the donation. And Andrea faces a dilemma in that the death shroud she is making for size 8 Cathy, which is also acting as her term assignment, has to appear in a fashion show on a model size 6 or smaller, Andrea who refuses to cut the outfit just to make the runway model look better. It's May, four months since Cathy entered the hospice. She still wants to get all her affairs in order before she passes, which seems to be soon as she can no longer walk, has constantly blurry vision, and is in constant pain even with the morphine. There are things that Cathy can't control, however. She knows that she will not see Adam graduate, as he still has one more year of classes, that is if he even passes the ones he's currently taking. She has no assurances what the afterlife holds for her or anyone who passes, although she does try to cover all the bases. And she can't control exactly when she will die, she trying to will it after each special moment, that dying moment which she feels will define how others view her after she's gone. She will find that there are other things she can't control as witnessed by news she gets from the hospice. In that regard, she asks Sean for a favor, she having chosen him largely because of his decision to donate a kidney to a total stranger. ... Written by Huggo
