Following Simon's death, Cyrus' vulgar behavior makes him an unpopular king. Liam and Eleanor are horrified, but Eleanor strategically feigns reconciliation with Cyrus in order to solve her father's murder. She rejects Jasper's attempts to get back together with her, but Liam is pleased to have him on side, to help get Holloway to destroy Cyrus's alibi for the night of the king's death. Cyrus asks Marcus to return as security head in order to spy on his niece and nephew. Discovering the Prime Minister's weakness, Helena puts pressure on him to change the order of succession, making her the heir apparent. Liam learns from Jasper that Cyrus has a double, but Cyrus explains that he uses the man when he is having treatment for cancer. Cyrus also takes revenge on Holloway for destroying his alibi. Eleanor gets back with old flame Beck and acquires a new bodyguard in the older James Hill. Jasper makes it clear that he intends to resume his relationship with the princess, hinting as much to Beck during a party. The Prime Minister dies on the eve of the new Act of Succession and Helena needs her aide Rachel to help cover up his death (and propensity for wearing women's undies) until the bill is passed. Liam travels to New York to see Ophelia but finds she has a new lover whilst Beck treats Eleanor to a country picnic, hoping to persuade her to slow down her life style. However when he is asleep, she goes clubbing, meeting kindred spirit Mandy. Helena is not pleased to meet the confrontational but extremely popular acting prime minister Rani, who has no respect for the monarchy, particularly Helena, and makes it clear that she will block the Accession Bill. Cyrus is furious to learn that Helena intends to unveil a monument to Simon and cancels the ceremony, making it appear as a concession to non-Royalists. Liam steps in to ensure the dedication goes ahead but a drunken Cyrus later destroys the statue. Eleanor slips away from bodyguard James for a drug-filled afternoon with Mandy, later ending up in bed with her though she is unaware that Mandy has her own agenda. Ted returns to work, haunted by the death of his wife during an attempted assassination and a man steps out of the shadows to accuse him of killing Simon. As Cyrus shows his gratitude to loyal maid Violet Rani agrees to keep his act of vandalism out of the press if he makes her full prime minister. His insecurity as he tries to rule by bullying is not helped by the ghostly presence of Simon, reminding him of his failings. Lucius lies to Queen Helena about the fate of Alistair and when Ted discovers the truth he persuades Lucius to own to killing Simon though Helena and Liam are not fully convinced. Liam himself meets an inspirational new friend Wilhelmina, who persuades him to use his position to do good whilst Eleanor goes public over her relationship with Mandy, unaware that her new girlfriend and old boyfriend are not what they seem. The twins' birthday arrives. Liam and Jasper spend the day paint-balling, having found a possible clue to the identity of Simon's murderer. Eleanor spends the day with Mandy, who organizes a lavish birthday party for the evening. However, when Jasper confesses to Eleanor the motives Mandy and he had for befriending her the party is well and truly over for her, though Wilhelmina is Liam's welcome guest. With only the support of his lover Violet, which horrifies Helena's mother Alexandra, Cyrus shows no sign of bowing to public pressure despite Rani's warning that she has the power to force a referendum on the monarchy and makes an appalling television broadcast. Following the clue of the necklace Liam discovers that Wilhelmina is the niece of Dominique Stewart, a woman that Simon loved and who died mysteriously. Dominique's brother Jeffrey, who has accused Ted of killing Simon, now asks for his help in revenge against the Royals.

Though he is not planning to marry her Cyrus is distraught when Violet disappears and Eleanor and Liam have cause to believe that Helena killed Dominique, with Ted's knowledge. However everybody is shocked by the identity of the double murderer, whom Helena intends to see punished. Meanwhile Eleanor warms to Agent Hill as he confides a secret in her whilst Liam, having offered to meet Dominique's brother to tell her the truth, is filmed in a heart-felt interview by Wilhelmina. As Ted discovers who killed Dominique he urges Jasper to stop his investigation into Simon's murder but Jasper is dogged and realizes Lucius could not have killed the king. Aware that Alistair is alive Helena has him released, convinced that Cyrus was behind the attempt to kill her love whilst Rani offers Liam a diplomatic job in New York to be near Ophelia, but, following his popularity after his leaked interview, he decides to stay in London, with Wilhelmina, and do good. Eleanor warms a little more to Jasper after he and Agent Hill have saved her and a friend from rehab, Imogen, from some nasty Russians, and it is also Jasper who supplies the footage exposing Simon's real killer. Jasper acts to stop Liam from taking instant revenge on his father's killer, gaining Eleanor's gratitude. Jeffrey plans to show the video in which his sister's murderer admits to killing her at a football match attended by the Royals but Jasper finds out and substitutes the CCTV footage of Simon being murdered and the crowd takes a bloody revenge on the culprit. Cyrus marries Prudence who gives birth shortly afterwards, thus, in his own mind providing him with a successor. However he has reckoned without Helena wreaking her own revenge on him.
