Stephen meets Cara, the voice in his head, her boyfriend John, martial arts expert Russell, and others living secretly underground. Despite his mother Marla's fears and doctors' meds, he is gaining three powers: telepathy, telekinesis, and teleportation. His father left his family to protect them but angering them, led the refugees, then vanished. His uncle Jed runs Ultra, who seek and kill or remove Tomorrow people's powers. Jed blackmails Stephen to join, threatening to harm his mom and younger brother Luca. Stephen stops Jed's bullet, and time, to free his new friends. John is reluctant to help Stephen, so Cara takes a watch with a chip to block mind-readers from his drawer. Jed recognizes the analog timepiece belongs to his brother, Stephen's dad, removes the chip, and orders the heirloom kept at home. Jed partners Stephen and sends them after a breakout thief age 17. Stephen guesses the boy steals for his sick mother, but the partner calls in armed soldiers. Jed kills the partner for failing to keep control in the assignment. Written by AnneToronto

Stephen plants a virus in the Ultra computer. Jed finds the bug and fakes a breakout to capture Cara. Stephen offers to give her the injection that removes their powers, saying her boyfriend John would then hate her for being human; she writhes as if the injection works. Cara used to be deaf and powerless, until she was almost raped. Accused of murdering her attacker, her skeptical father gave her his pocket money to leave; her younger sister cried out her name. Stephen wants to help a suicidal student on the anniversary of her sister's death, hit by a train. Cara convinces the girl she was blameless in an accident. Stephen's friend Astrid, who disbelieved his tale of powers before, sees him teleport away from the railway line, and insists she will keep on digging because he won't tell her the truth. When Ultra's most wanted, Killian McCrane, resurfaces after years of being in hiding, Stephen enlists John's help in tracking him down. John reluctantly agrees to help, but changes his mind when he learns that Killian isn't after Jedikiah as everyone suspects. Stephen, wants to help, but Cara explains that John's history with Killian, which brings back a flood of memories from John's past, is making him do something he never thought he would do again. After Stephen breaks Ultra protocol during a training exercise, Jedikiah's mysterious boss insists on meeting Stephen. Elsewhere, the Tomorrow People are desperate to go topside to a party like normal people, but John and Cara disagree on the dangerous plan. Everyone becomes concerned about the consequences if the Founder learns that Roger may return. Meanwhile, Stephen tries to destroy the machine the Founder has been using to train him; and Russell loses hope that the Refuge will ever be found and chooses to head out on his own with some other Tomorrow People.
