Four months after the final fight against the Wanderers brought down the Other Side, Mystic Falls remains magically protected against supernatural live beings. Inside, Matt is the closest thing to a master of the house, unable to get mourning couch potato Jeremy back into the game. At the outskirts, Stefano slaves as exploited car mechanic, Alaric teaches at college. Tyler is blindly hopeful, model student Caroline shocked to discover that Elena, finally returning to college too, is the mystery vampire who lurks around town bloodthirsty, in fact a side-effect of the herbal potion witch Luke gives her to communicate with dead Damon, who also feels she must make a clean break and seize life again. Knowing she needs to come to terms with the loss of Damon, Elena turns to Alaric to help her move on with her life. Enzo convinces Caroline to join him as he tracks down a lead to get Damon and Bonnie back, but Caroline is shocked when they make an unexpected detour and uncover what Stefan has been up to. Meanwhile, Matt worries about Jeremy who is spending time with Sarah, a mysterious girl who has recently arrived in Mystic Falls. Elsewhere, Tripp, leader of the community protection program, makes an interesting confession to Matt about his connection to the town. Lastly, with the Other Side destroyed and gone for good, Damon and Bonnie reluctantly band together to uncover the mystery of where they are and how they are going to get back home.

In an attempt to bring some fun back into their lives, Elena persuades Caroline to meet her and Liam at the swimming hole where she plans to introduce her to Liam. Tyler asks Liv for a favor and is surprised when she makes an unexpected confession. Stefan arrives back in Mystic Falls and is caught off guard when he notices a strange change in Elena. Meanwhile, at the lake, Jeremy makes a discovery about the anti-magic spell that could potentially put Elena's life in danger. Stefan is still coping with the loss of his brother. Tripp is a creepy as ever. Ivy faces some new challenges. Caroline tries to help Ivy and witnesses something awful. Damon and Bonnie keep trying how to figure out how to go home, while Kai continues to be crazy. Elena asks Liam to the Homecoming Corn Maze, which consists of unexpected events. Liv helps Tyler with a rough time and he tries to do the same for her. Alaric tries to get out more like Elena suggested and goes to Homecoming, which may not be the best idea.

Stefan is delighted to have Damon back but Jeremy misses 'self-sacrificed' Bonnie even worse now and Elena refuses to have her memory restored by Alaric. Trip catches vampires, including Damon and Enzo, and has them transported to the border to be killed by the magic ban. During the last-minute rescue after Matt warns Stefan, Alaric falls on the fatal side and is barely brought back from death by his witch lover Dr. Jo but discovers this undid his vampire status. In a battle of magical wits, inscrutable Kai survives Bonie's attempts to kill him or return to the present without him and makes her consider a partnership after all, and attempts to take over control of her magic. Damon finds a clue that Bonnie may well be alive and keeps trying everything to make Elena regain her memory or fall in love with him again, which only works once he believes the game lost. Tyler assures witch lover Liv he would rather suffer lunatic transformations again then give up on his loved-ones. Enzo is accepted back in the vampire fold, like Matt, whose slayer boss Tripp is duly executed. Alaric is delighted to be human again and partner to a non-practicing witch, doc Jo. Elena wakes up only to find Kai and herself in her old high school, seeking to find the truth of why he is keeping her in captivity. Meanwhile liv Helps Joe train to control her powers, and later tries to help Damon with finding elena! Aswell caroline tries to find a solution for her mom and her health.

When Liv and Luke's father arrives to town to celebrate their birthday, they try and convince him to let Jo and Kai take their place in the merge ceremony. After Tyler finds out that the merge is happening sooner than he expected, he urges Liv to let him talk to her father. Meanwhile, after Caroline's plan to cure her mother takes an unexpected and devastating turn, Elena, Stefan and Damon gather at the hospital, while Jo attempts to save Sheriff Forbes' life. Lastly, with the merge set to take place, Damon's risky plan quickly sends things spiraling out of control, forcing one of the twins to take matters into their own hands.

Elena is determined to celebrate Bonnie's birthday; after learning Stefan's secret, Enzo wants to interfere in Sarah Salvatore's life; Caroline struggles to cope with everything going on around her.

Guardian Alaric has a secret plan with Jeremy whom Damon and Elena help transfer to an art academy in the Southwest so he can finally have a'normal life. The Salvatores' unwitting niece Sarah Nelson is lured into Mystic falls with a photography job, Enzo forces Matt to play a painful part in his revenge plans using her. Sheriff Forbes is dying, but refuses to leave the office without a last go at a pile of unsolved cases - Damon confesses most and helps examine the death of Jeremy and Elena's parents, officially a car accident. While Caroline seeks some control by meticulously preparing perfect last days for mother Liz, Stefano already delivers on his promise to look after her and realizes he may be falling in love. Nearly all Mystic falls attends sheriff Forbes' funeral, a cause for elaborate reminiscing in her and the mourners' family history. Matt keeps drunk Tyler away but offers to join police academy together. Damon ends up writing the eulogy, in part making up for his failure to do so at father Salvatore's death to kid brother Stefan's frustration. Despite lover Alaric's advice, Jo agrees, when Kai shows their magical bond instead of the twins made both of them ill, to donate her magic to him. Thus they hope to prevent a collapse of the magical prison dimensions, between which Bonnie now finds herself traveling, before returning to elated Damon.The brothers agree now Stefan is over losing Elena, he should go for his less passionate love for Caroline, whom Elena analyzes as in denial but fails to stop from turning off her emotions in vampire mode. In this episode Damon, Elena, Kai, and Bonnie go to the 1903 prison world to rescue Lily Salvatore and bring her back to get Stefan to flip on his humanity switch. Caroline and Stefan have many heated arguments and fights on Whitmore campus over Stefan not ruining Her life. Enzo realizes, after seeing Sarah in the hospital, that he has feeling for her.

Damon concocts a risky plan to stop Caroline and Stefan from wreaking havoc.

Stefano's duel in cruelty among 'merely physical' lovers finally brings Caroline to turn her feelings back on, over a destroyed last letter from her late mother Liz, but in grief she refuses further contact. Bonnie is furious to learn that Damon didn't hand Elena the cure but stole the ascendant as reward if mother Lily triggers Stefano back to humanity, which might allow Kai to escape. Enzo shows surprising sympathy when his 'creator' Lily admits she can't suppress her ripper nature. Convinced Damon won't allow her to retrieve her ripper family, she tries to turn Elena against him by telling her he had the cure, but he now proposes to take it together.
