Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes gets shot and falls into a coma. When awoken he finds himself in a Zombie Apocalypse. The community in the prison has grown significantly and they are slowly becoming self sufficient. They are growing vegetables and raising pigs and soon will no longer need to go on food runs. For now, that's still a requirement and Glenn, Tyreese, Daryl, Michonne and several others go to a nearby army base to see what they can find. All goes well until a minor accident results in walkers dropping in on them. Back at the prison, Rick goes to check their trap line and comes across a woman who says she and her husband haven't eaten for four days and would like to join their camp. After Patrick falls sick and dies, he begins attacking others inside the prison, showing just how vulnerable they all are. Before they know it, the cell block is infested with walkers. The residents have been exposed to a severe strain of the flu and as they die, they turn into walkers. They begin by isolating those with flu symptoms. Carol continues in her quest to teach the children they have to be strong. Someone is feeding live rats to the walkers and they nearly push in the outer fence. Two people are found burned to death. Darryl drives Zach's car with Michonne, Tyreese and Bob to a rural university eighty miles far from the prison to seek antibiotics to heal the infected people. Carol goes outside the prison to unblock the water piping while Rick investigates the murder of David and Karen, coming to a surprising revelation. Daryl, Michone, Tyreese and Bob go to the university to get medical supplies for the survivors. Tyreese is furious and Bob confesses to Daryl the he is alcoholic. Meanwhile Rick and Carol travel by car to get supplies for the group since most of the food was lost in the infected block. They reach a suburb and find a young couple while searching the houses for food. When they get the supplies, they find the girl dead and her boyfriend missing. Hershel fights to keep the outbreak under control, tending to the sick patients and killing those who transform into walkers, first luring them away from the survivors. Rick returns without Carol and tells Maggie what happened to her. When a large number of walkers knock down the fence, Rick and Carl shoot them with automatic weapons. Brian Heriot wanders without direction and disconnected from the world, until he meets a family living in a building. Tara and Lilly take care of their terminal father David and Lilly's daughter, the autistic Megan, in a small apartment and they welcome Brian. He helps the family to bring more oxygen supply and to bury David and becomes close to Lilly. Then they decide to move using the delivery truck that belonged to the deceased father. In the middle of the road, the truck breaks down and they need to walk. When a group of walkers comes toward them, they need to run and Megan finally reacts and Brian saves her live and promises that he will always protect her. The Governor, Lilly, Tara and Megan are welcomed by Martinez's group of survivors. After a patrol of Martinez, Pete, Mitch and the Governor, Martinez plays golf on the roof of a RV. Out of the blue, the Governor kills him and Pete takes the provisional leadership of the group. The Governor also kills him and then he threatens Mitch to assume the leadership of the survivors. The Governor convinces his new community that it is in their best interests to take over the prison and if necessary, use force to do so. Not everyone is comfortable with that approach - Lilly and Meghan stay behind, with tragic consequences. The Governor and his crew appear at the prison and has two bargaining chips with him - Herschel and Michonne are his prisoners. He tells Rick to be out by sundown. Daryl and Beth are on the run through the woods tracking down other survivors. Tyreese is protecting Judith, Lizzie and Mica; when he overhears screams, he tries to help two men that are being attacked by walkers and leaves the girls alone in the woods. Out of the blue, Carol appears and saves the girls, who are surrounded by walkers. One man tells them to stay on the tracks because there is a place that is safe for the children following the tracks. Maggie seeks out Glenn with Sasha and Bob. When they see the bus that left the prison, they find that there are walkers imprisoned inside. Maggie decides to open the door to see if Glenn is in the bus. Michonne has reunited with Carl and Rick. While she and Carl head off to find supplies while Rick stays behind, still recovering from his wounds. While on their trip, Carl learns that Michonne has a child, a boy named Andre. Back at the house, Rick awakens to find a group of armed men searching the place and has to find a way out. Glen meanwhile awakens to find himself in the back of a truck and learns from Tara that they passed the prison bus about 3 hours ago. Their new traveling companions tell them that they're on an urgent - and secret - mission and headed to Washington D.C. Survival is the main challenge for Daryl and Beth. They have yet to find a secure place to stay and are eating whatever they can find or kill, like squirrels and snakes. Beth is fed up with it all and decides she wants to do something she has never done before - go somewhere, anywhere, and have an alcoholic drink. Daryl and Beth think they may have found a safe haven. It's a well maintained house with lots of food in the cupboard. The fact there's no dust on the jars and cans they find suggests that someone lives there. They make themselves comfortable but their feelings of safety also make them vulnerable. When they're attacked by a horde of walkers, they are separated. Sasha, Bob and Maggie continue along the railroad tracks headed for what they hope will be a safe haven. Carol, Tyreese, Lizzie, Mika and baby Judith come across an abandoned house. They move in and Tyreese begins to think that perhaps they don't have to make their way to Terminus but can just settle there. Carol comes around to thinking the same. She's worried about Lizzie however who doesn't seem to realize that zombies aren't just a different kind of people nor how dangerous they are. Several groups continue to travel to Terminus. Michonne, Carl and Rick seem to be in good spirits and in good health. Glen,Tara and their newfound traveling companions come across a Terminus sign with Maggie's message. HGlen is prepared to start running down the tracks but the others calm him down. When they reach a train tunnel, Glen refuses to go around and he and Tara set off on their own. Inside, they come to a welcome reunion. Daryl has stayed with his new companions but he is having trouble with one member of the group. Their leader, Joe, tries to get him to play by their rules but Daryl is reluctant. Rick, Carl and Michonne are getting ever closer to Terminus. They've had a rough time on the road and can only hope that what they find there is better than what they have now. In the night, they are taken prisoner by Joe and the others. It's clear that Rick is the man they've been hunting but Daryl tries to explain that they are good people. Joe won't hear any excuses. When it appears that Carl is about to be raped, Rick shows just how violent he is prepared to be to defend his family and friends.
