Kurtan is smitten by village newcomer Kayleigh, even though she has no conversation. Kerry meanwhile is angry when her trailer-dwelling father Martin is accused of voyeurism at the local tennis club and joins him at the caravan pretending to fly planes. Kurtan's plan to introduce Kayleigh to Kerry and Martin does not end well, leading to fisticuffs, but this time Kayleigh has decided that she prefers Kurtan's friend Slugs to him. Kurtan is focusing his attentions on the annual village scarecrow festival, a key event in the village calendar that can both unite and divide the community. Tensions run high when his chances of winning the competition are compromised by being given a less than ideal plot to display his scarecrow. Meanwhile, Kerry faces a challenge to her authority. Kerry and Kurtan run foul of the village by celebrating, rather than mourning, the death of their old teacher Mr Perkins, though Kurtan is more obsessed with tracking down old school-mate Robert Robinson, a quest ending in disappointment. Kurtan calls on Kerry and argues with her over cooking a pizza, which turns out to be inedible. They are awaiting the release from prison of their Uncle Nuggett, falsely accused, they claim, of stealing a bus. Kerry and Kurtan attend a talk at the village hall with a business woman who runs what may or may not be a pyramid scheme. Kerry is inspired and starts a career as a door-to-door saleswoman. However, her focus on the business leads to disharmony with Kurtan, and this is only compounded when he makes some new friends in the village.
