The man, a recovered alcoholic, recently made desperate attempts to make up with, and tried to compensate by testament, his ex and their daughters, a bitter lawyer and a self-destructive stripper coming to a bloody end. His doctor worries he may have turned to a quack with brains scans showing a tumor, considering he believed since childhood to have been abducted by aliens. Pathologically insecure Irene Shaw disappeared after winning a TV reality show about extreme plastic surgery makeovers. The anonymous voice scolding her a freak at the public award ceremony checks out innocent. The FBI must also look into the fiance who dumped her as well as a playboy who found her disgustingly desperate, an old family trauma and dodgy business behind the plastic surgery screens and in the studio. While the team struggles to find out what they can about the young woman's personal life, Sam feels the case is hitting very close to home. They soon learn of a drug smuggling gang and an ex-con who is connected to other unusually similar cases of missing women. Although the agents initially suspect that the defendant may have orchestrated Peter's disappearance as a means of forcing a mistrial, they soon wonder if the juror disappeared of his own volition, since he tried to recuse himself with a note from his cardiologist the day after the defendant threatened a witness in the courtroom. The team soon finds he was actually involved in a massive white slavery network and leans on the nightclub-owning kingpin. The greater surprise is when the mystery woman turns up and unveils Lance was the alias of an undercover police detective, whose cover her visit may have blown as he recently sent her to an aunt and tried to cover his tracks. As any detective can tell you, investigating missing property or deaths is comparatively easy compared to elusive missing people. However in New York City, there is a special unit of the FBI that is designed to find them. Using the vast resources of their bureau, the team, lead by Agent Jack Malone, race against time in the tight 72 hour window after a disappearance while hope for a recovery is still typically possible.
