James Bentley is tried for the murder of Abigail McGinty, the charwoman of Broadhinny who also took in Bentley as her lodger. The evidence is overwhelming, and soon after he is sentenced to hang. Superintendent Spence is not convinced of the man's guilt, and so he visits Poirot, asking him to look into the case. Poirot then heads off to the village, where he becomes the paying guest of Maureen and Major Johnnie Summerhayes. Ariadne Oliver, Poirot's novelist friend, has also come to Broadhinny to collaborate on a stage adaptation of one of her novels with dramatist Robin Upward. With the clue of a bottle of ink purchased by the dead woman shortly before her death, Poirot searches Mrs. McGinty's belongings and finds an edition of The Sunday Comet newspaper, where an article concerning two women connected with famous murders has been cut out. With the story are two photographs of the women. Poirot discovers that Mrs. McGinty had seen one of the photographs before, and knew to whom it ... Written by shanty_sleuth

After Buchan identifies the killer's modus operandi as aping the Marquis De Sade, who murdered women after poisoning them with an aphrodisiac, Chandler and Miles hunt for the individual who contacted a firm specializing in love potions by masquerading as a couple. This leads the team to S and M club the Hooded Crow, where Mina almost falls victim to a man with vampiric tendencies. Then two more victims are found, identical in height and appearance to the first two. Chandler overrules Mina and follows Miles' suggestion that they concentrate on finding Ella Bowe. Whilst Ross's cooperative has some success there are hard times throughout Cornwall and typhoid sweeps through Bodmin jail and kills Jim Carter just as Ross and Dwight break in to rescue him. Dwight is also called upon to visit the injured Keren, who throws herself shamelessly at the young doctor, as Demelza notices. Untouched by privation the Warleggans throw a ball where Francis, struggling to accept his reduced circumstances, neglects Elizabeth, allowing George to step in as her escort. Ross turns up drunk and confronts Halse, the magistrate who jailed Jim and then plays cards recklessly though he does expose his opponent as a card sharp, known to the Warleggans, who are now all the more determined to break him.
