Rustlers are hitting Shiloh with small raids but there is no proof who is behind it. Jean is slightly wounded with a warning shot from them but Clay doesn't want to go to the sheriff yet as he thinks the rustlers are local. Clay continues to help an old friend, Tim Bradbury, from 20 years ago in Texas who he feels obliged to since Tim went broke due to a drought after buying out Clay's share of their ranch and cattle. Clay went north and became wealthy. Tim has two sons. One, Mike, works for Clay but is unreliable and gambles heavily. The other son, Walt, is industrious but wants to farm to become financially solvent while his father continues to dream of rebuilding his Texas ranch life. Tim with a reluctant Walt goes to Clay to ask to delay his payment on the second mortgage to allow Tim to buy a $300 bull to start a herd. Major Adams and Hawks find a boy camping in a ravine as they near Fort Stoneman in hostile Indian territory. He is heading east alone and refuses to go with the train to the Fort to catch a ride east. A massive thunderstorm scares off several horses and floods the ravine. The boy escapes and comes to the train for help. Ultimately he has to go with the train to the Fort where Adams wants to buy horses but needs permission from his old commander Col. Benedict who is on a week long drunk. Adams who found the boy had been flogged soon learns he is the son of Benedict who court martialed him for stomping on the US flag at the funeral of a dear friend. His father carried out the flogging himself resulting in his mental breakdown. General Phil Sheridan is coming to inspect the Fort. The family has a long military tradition but the son wants to be a violinist. Knowing the boy's father and mother, Adams tries to explain things to the son who learns facts he did not know earlier. Lt. Hanley and three others are on a night mission to blow up a German fuel dump with satchel charges. As soon as the charges blow, the GIs are spotted, and a firefight ensues. Two of the GIs are killed in the firefight, and Hanley is left to escape with Pvt. Wilder, a frightened replacement with no combat experience. In his haste to get away, Wilder runs into quicksand and quickly starts to sink. He yells for Hanley, and they are spotted by two Germans. Hanley kills them, but he is hit in the shoulder in the firefight. The wounded Hanley then climbs out on a tree limb overhanging Wilder and ties an ammo belt to one arm of his battle jacket and suspends it from the limb to keep Wilder from sinking deeper. Hanley goes back to the fuel dump to find a rope to get Wilder out, but a badly wounded German finds Wilder hanging from the jacket arm and shoots the jacket apart just before he dies from his wounds. Hanley returns with a rope, throws it over the limb to Wilder, and ties it off ... Written by David Wile

The old ranch hand, Slim Jessup, runs away from the Idaho law after he kills a man in self-defense. Meanwhile, The Virginian is charged with the task of driving 2000 head of cattle to Moose Jaw, Canada to meet a contract deadline the Judge needs to keep Shiloh solvent due to a US financial crisis. The time is short and The Virginia has no experienced trail hands. Slim an old friend of The Virginian trails the herd and when confronted asks for a job which The Viriginian is glad to offer. Along the trail a farmer's 16 year old stepson, James Cafferty, sees the herd and decides to ask to join the drive as a trail hand to escape the dull farm life. Slim counters The Virginian's objections and takes James under his wing and the two become close friends.
