Nai'Be is a Shoshone girl the Graingers sponsored to send back east for schooling. Clay's hope is that she can use the education to help her people bridge the gulf between the white and the Shoshone worlds. At the same time Tza'Wuda who was her childhood sweetheart has worked at Shiloh learning ranching. Clay is providing him with stock to start his own ranch on the reservation. He is anxiously awaiting Nai'Be return as he hopes to marry her. However, she is conflicted on her future. The school taught her the white life but ignored her Shoshone background which she came to ignore to fit in with the other girls. Now she is unsure of her future. Adding to the problems is the fact water rights on the Shoshone land has been granted to rancher McKinley forcing the Shoshone village to move. Some in the tribe want to resist but Chief Den'Gwatzi says they must move. Tza'Wuda and Nai'Be with his herd return to reservation with Shiloh hands as the issue with the village move peaks.
