Just after retreating from the White House, dad Joe gets a cardiac episode which leaves him mentally disabled, stirring memories of retarded daughter Mary-Rose's fate. JFK goes all the way for equality, regardless of the explosive risks ensuing in Dixieland when he and Bobby ultimately send in the National Guard to fight the Mississippi governor and a whites-only university.
