The Virginian accompanies his friend Wesley Hedges to sell his horses to the Army at Tiburon for a good price. Hedges receives $2500 for the herd but Hedges has fallen for a beautiful faro dealer, Alma Wilson. The Virginian afraid Alma will take Hedges for his money agrees to hold $2400 while Hedges gambles with the other $100. The two return to the hotel but Hedges takes back the $2400. As he arrives he observes three men beating up one man so he steps in to break it up. The man he helps provides directions to Frank Adams' farm where he meets Adams' wife Marie who is elated he wants the oats. After looking over the oats, The Virginian offers $300 for a thousand bushels delivered to the railroad which is reluctantly accepted by Adams. From there he goes to visit rancher Tom Hadley, a friend of Grainger. He walks into the middle of a war session where the ranchers are discussing how to fight the homesteaders. A trio of soldiers are transporting a prisoner across Shiloh property due to a lack of water when they learn after a run in with Trampas it appears the prisoner has scarlet fever. A private runs off with the horses leaving two feuding troopers a foot. Elizabeth and Holly Grainger find the prisoner and troopers stranded inadvertently helping the prisoner escape when Elizabeth runs up to see who is in the wagon. The four walk to Shiloh with the troopers in irons. The Graingers are concerned especially with Elizabeth contracting scarlet fever while Trampas helps the two soldiers who have their own internal feud try to recapture the prisoner. However, Trampas is plagued with flashbacks of his own history with scarlet fever killing his mother and brother. Trampas and two cowhands, Burt and Morgan, drive a herd of cattle to a remote army fort. Trampas must go to Triste, which is almost a ghost town, to receive the $1500 for the herd. However, the owner of the bank is gone so he must wait overnight to get the money. While there he encounters an old friend from Abilene he knew ten years before, Lee Knight, who is a gun fighter tired of life. When he applies for a license for the restaurant with the Justice of Peace, Milo Temple, it is denied because he is Chinese and a very selective law in Medicine Bow. Trampas drops Stacey at the Medicine Bow depot to leave on the 8:30 pm train to San Francisco to take papers to The Virginian. Stacey leaves his suitcase with the station master while he waits for the train. When he returns to get on the train, he is knocked out. The Graingers visit Medicine Bow where Elizabeth picks up one of many new breeds of chickens she ordered and John visits the bank. Meanwhile, at the saloon Dell Stetler waits at the bar as the other four members of his gang arrive. One is late due to a hurt horse delaying their planned robbery of the bank. As two of the men enter the bank, one member Bob Archer feels something is wrong. As he walks into the street Ryker yells at him from his seat telling him to look up. At the saloon a deputy quickly exits when The Virginian asks about Stacey leaving it to the saloon owner Clara to break the news that Stacey is in jail. At the jail he finds Stacey convicted of murdering the very popular and respected local doctor John Marsh. Stacey is scheduled to hang the next morning. The town acted quickly believing Stacey is guilty after losing his money in a card game and having a dispute with the victim during the game plus two men found him by the dead doctor. The Virginian asks for a delay but the town officials refuse. The local telegraph messages are relayed by horseback preventing speedy access to outside help or Stacey's family. Stacey buys a used watch that appears to be have belonged to his dad from a peddler. It brings back memories of his parents and their death at the hand of Indians when the watch was taken. He confirms with his grandfather that the watch may have been the one he gave to his son so he goes on the hunt to track the previous owners of the watch. After finding a couple of previous owners, he is lead to Elaine who remembers the watch as hers and the only memento of her dad who left her when she was four. Together they track down the history of the watch and her parents. The trip takes them to Texas and an Indian reservation where Stacey is able to recall the truth about his parents' deaths.
