As France falls to the Nazis the odious Count de St Claire and his secretary Lucian D'Abberville are amongst the refugees staying at the Halcyon. The count makes advances to chambermaid Kate and flies into a rage when his gun disappears. A search of the staff's lockers reveals that Max has stolen a pair of Lord Hamilton's cuff-links and he is arrested. Emma, now assistant manager, feels sorry for him on learning he was hoping to sell them to raise money to help his family come to England and persuades Lady Hamilton to drop charges. He is reinstated at the hotel, to the annoyance of Perry, who is dismissed by Emma. Young page-boy Billy, who took the gun, confronts the count with it on hearing of Kate's experience and the count demands his dismissal. However Richard, learning of the count's philandering reputation at other hotels, conspires with Lucian to make him leave. He returns to Emily, who tells him Garrett's alibi clears him of taking their son and who also lies by saying Tony was with her at the time of Garrett's disappearance. After Mark has saved Emily from suicide the Hughes return to England and Julien goes to visit his drug addicted daughter in hospital. He is attacked by a masked man, who proves to be Ziane,who has just done a deal with Suri. 2014:- Julien and Tony locate Karl Sieg but he has little to give them, beyond the fact that he was called in to clear up blood in the house where Oliver had been held. In 2014 Vincent Bourg visits Garrett's wife Mary in a psychiatric unit where she believes she is on an ocean cruise and Rini is able to locate the suspect Karl Sieg, living in Belgium under an assumed name. This is an advance on eight years earlier when her efforts to sound out her brother about the Romanian gang led to her being knifed. At that time Emily went to England to see Mary, who threw her out after she mentioned Molly and Tony , after assaulting Bourg, tracked down Ian Garrett on his boat. 2006:- Julien shows Tony photos of Greg Halpern, Emily's supposed lover whom he savagely beat up six years earlier though no charges were pressed. Emily feels left out and berates Mark for not doing more whilst Tony is curious as to why Ian is being so helpful. Tony breaks into Bourg's flat but finds nothing and is thrown out when Bourg returns. An undercover cop from Paris arrives with possible news for Julien but is murdered. 2014:- Julien suggests they should find residents who might have seen Oliver going into the basement . Emily arrives and is sceptical as to any result but then Julien shows Tony a video of Oliver in a house. In 2006 Emily and Tony Hughes and their little boy Oliver are on holiday at Chalons Du Bois in France. Tony and his son visit a bar to watch television but when Tony turns round Oliver has gone. Tony contacts the local police, led by English-speaking Laurence Relaud and she brings in Parisian detective Julien Baptiste who issues an abduction alert. Emily's parents Penny and Robert turn up, Robert suggesting that Oliver has been kidnapped out of revenge. Also on the scene are journalist Malik Suri and the English police liaison officer Mark Walsh with his young son. Eight years later Emily has moved on and is now living with Mark. Tony however has never stopped trying to find Oliver and, accompanied by Julien, who is now retired, visits a house in the village where there is evidence that Oliver may have stayed.
