Dianne Price is drowned in the style of the Brides in the Bath murders of almost a century earlier. Blessed Be the Bride is scrawled in lipstick on her bathroom mirror. Cyclist Greg Eddon is killed after winning the local leg of a national race, beating team mate Mitch McCordell at the last minute. Mitch's father Des, who owns the DJM racing stable tells Barnaby the race is make or break for them but there are clearly factions as Mitch's brother Aiden had sent threatening texts to Greg after he was seen kissing Aiden's girlfriend Amber. Local environmentalist Gerry Bleacher opposes the races, claiming that people die because of them and organizer and pub landlady Mary Appleton receives messages accusing her of murder. Des admits that DJM's sponsorship depends on Mitch's continuing success as the company is cash strapped whilst Reece Dexter, who runs rival team Ravondale, accuses Des of corruption and persuades Aiden to cycle for his stable. Suzie Colebrook is electrocuted by a roulette wheel sent to her house. She was the legal executor and supposed lover of thriller writer George Summersbee whose Jed Dagger novels she also illustrated. At the same time a newly discovered manuscript by George of an unpublished Dagger story is stolen from Suzie's home. A local crime fiction festival is going on, run by Maggie Markham, whose doctor husband Nick Summersbee has written his brother George's biography whilst George's daughter Bella, rather than estranged wife Jeanie, is his sole heir. Following a second murder Barnaby finds out that both were copied from killings in a Dagger novel though the victim was a stranger to Suzie. There are a number of people anxious for different reasons to locate the missing manuscript but there are also suggestions that it is a fake. Midsomer biscuit tycoon Eric Calder is poisoned by one of his own biscuits whilst in Copenhagen to seal a contract with businessman Albert Toft. As the goods were sent from Midsomer, detective Birgitte Poulsen asks Barnaby to investigate. He finds that Eric's son Harry had no interest in the family firm but had recently rowed with Eric whilst his wife Penelope has been having an affair with his brother Julian. Also in the frame is chief baker Armand Stone, a man with a good knowledge of chemistry. Julian is also murdered, drowned in whisky, but Barnaby and Nelson fly to Copenhagen from where a floral tribute was sent to Eric's funeral, paid for by a credit card stolen from Pastor Thomas Madsen. They find that Eric has been involved for many years with Ingrid Madsen, by whom he has a daughter. Whilst the murderer is clearly human, mysterious pamphlets circulate the village, warning not to disturb the spirits, who will wreak revenge, and a second ghost hunt leads to another murder, that of pub landlord Ross Clymer, lover of Simon's wife and enemy of army deserter Ollie Tabori, the former boyfriend of Simon's put upon sister Valerie. The Midsomer Langley Film Society shows a retrospective of horror films made by local actress Stella Harris but Stella is upstaged when glamorous movie star Diana Davenport, her sister, returns to the area for the first time in forty years with film producer husband Cy. The same night Eve Lomax, a writer working on a book about Stella, is murdered, her neck punctured as if by a vampire. Eve was not popular with Stella or film society president Colin Yule, who claims Eve stole a photo of Stella. During a local eclipse of the sun, Jeremy Harper, one of a group of amateur astronomers, is killed on Moonstone Ridge by a blow to the head with a meteorite. Jeremy had rowed with Laurence Janson, head of the university observatory over plans to extend the observatory onto the ridge but was unaware of his wife Catrina's affair with Janson. Local clairvoyant Mags Dormer had warned Jeremy of impending disaster and tells Barnaby that Moonstone Ridge is cursed, since Catrina's sister Mary, wife of pharmacist Harry Dutta, also died there some years earlier. Then other murders occur, of members of the group who were opposed to Janson's plans but had also made a discovery of their own, leading to a resolution of the case written in the stars. When bird-watcher Ralph Ford claims to have seen a blue-crested hoopoe - thus winning him the year's list contest - other members of the Midsomer-in-the-Marsh ornithological society are angry, especially society chairman Patrick Morgan, who, later that night is lured to his death by a call on Ford's stolen phone. Morgan was generally unpopular in the society and farmer George Napier benefits by the death as Morgan intended to save wetlands he intended to drain whilst his Russian widow Nina, a former ballerina, is pregnant, and since her husband had had a vasectomy he is not the father. At Midsomer Priory, home to a small group of nuns, Mother Thomas Aquinas is strangled and, shortly afterwards, a set of silver worth £60,000 is found to be stolen from the safe. Sister Catherine, the most recent member of the order, turns out to be descended from Sir Anthony Vertue, who donated the priory to the nuns two centuries earlier and Barnaby learns that if the order is ended she will inherit the land and buildings. Father Behan, who heard the nuns' confessions and had long exhorted Mother Julian, the prioress, to sell the premises, is also killed and the missing silver turns up, not stolen but sold by Mother Thomas Aquinas. Then Barnaby learns of an atrocity in Africa thirty years earlier where Mother Julian was a missionary, which could help him solve the case but also put an end to the sacred trust.
