Meryl Johnson is the manager of the Ellerby Building Society. One day she gets two uninvited guests. They want to keep her and her son Toby as hostages for a couple of days and then make her pick up all the money of the society for them. Luckily she manages to get a warning off to PC Ventress without the villains noticing it, and the police put her cottage under surveillance. There have been a number of salmonella related deaths in Aidensfield. The only common denominator seems to be the homemade chicken pie of the Aidensfield Arms. When Toby Johnson gets ill PPC Nicholson, who is on surveillance duty, reports the good Dr. Summerbee leaving, but not arriving (because he was taking a nap). On the eve of his retirement surgeon Dan Marsden is shot dead and his daughters Karen and Mira taken. His widow Laura tells Vera that Mira is an Iraqi war orphan on whom Dan operated before the couple adopted her. An iconic picture of her was taken by war photographer Jonah Regan, whom Vera visits and learns that Jonah had tried to adopt Mira but failed, due to the unstable behaviour that had caused his wife to leave him. New recruit Barry finds a link with Iraqi Malik, an illegal immigrant recently smuggled into the area. Karen is located and freed but Barry is killed and Laura wounded by the kidnapper who was returning for diabetic Mira's insulin. It becomes evident that the kidnapper is known to Mira and she is a willing abductee but Vera must stop them leaving the country and work out how he knew where to find her. Conscious that she indirectly caused Grace's death and unable to concentrate on her mock exams Franky feels alienated from her friends and smothered by her well-intentioned gay dads. Thus when drug pusher Luke reappears she finds herself drawn to his violent life style with some of it even rubbing off on her at home. Counselling is no help and when Nick tries to intervene when Luke starts another fight and ends up getting hurt Franky almost seems to relish it.
