Malcolm Kramer, an older gentleman in the bar, has just found out he only has six months to live. He mentions to Sam that he was happiest when he used to tend bar when he was a student, so Sam suggests that he go behind the bar and relive his old college days. He does so and has a great time, and so does everyone in the bar. Before he departs, he leaves a note in the tip jar to show his appreciation, this note unbeknown to anyone else until after he leaves. It is an amendment to his will, written on a bar napkin, bestowing $100,000 to the gang at Cheers. After getting advice from Cliff and wannabe lawyer Tom on the legalities of the bar napkin, the gang want someone to go get Malcolm back to legalize the will amendment. They also fight amongst themselves for what they feel is their rightful individual share - that is, everyone except Diane, who does not like what the prospect of money is doing to her friends. Dick Cavett stops by the bar for a drink. Diane can't help but monopolize his time with readings of her poetry, that is until Sam pulls her away from him. Dick recognizes Sam and suggests to him that there may be some public interest in his memoirs. Diane is hurt by this as she sees herself as the writer, not Sam. Rebecca, an old friend of Diane's from her Bennington years, stops by the bar for a visit. Rebecca breaks down that she has broken up with her long time boyfriend, and is looking for something she's never had before: a foolish night of unbridled passion with a man of peasant stock, tall, dark, handsome, and most importantly unintellectual. Although Diane knows that description fits Sam to a T, she doesn't mention it to Rebecca. However Sam appears and Rebecca knows immediately he is what she's looking for. Diane confides to Sam that Rebecca is at a vulnerable state, however Sam goes off with her anyway for an afternoon tryst. After a couple of hours, Sam returns to the bar, alone, telling Diane that nothing happened between him and Rebecca, since she was such a depressing bore. Rebecca returns to the bar distraught that someone like Sam would find her so repulsive. Unfortunately, he's an obnoxious lout, which is obvious to almost all (Diane initially gives Roy the benefit of the doubt but comes to the same conclusion). Coach has a heart-to-heart with his daughter, in which she acknowledges that Roy is flawed and is using her but says she wants to be married and have a family and thinks that Roy may be her only chance. Sportscaster Dave Richards drops by the bar to ask Sam to do an on-camera interview for the evening sportscast that day. The gang at the bar all think it's a great idea except for Diane, who fears Sam will come across as a pathetic figure trying to relive his long, lost glory. Diane's explanation only spurs Sam into doing the interview, to be conducted at the bar. Before going off to get his crew, Dave admits to Carla and Diane that Sam was not his first choice for the interview, nor was he the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth choice. In going through with the interview, Sam, based on a mid-interview incident, comes to a realization that places a certain punctuation mark at this phase of his professional life. After another loss by the Red Sox, this time to the Yankees, Carla vows for the umpteenth time that she is no longer a fan. She shows that she is all hot air as usual when a man named Big Ed, a Yankees fan from New York, comes into the bar denigrating the Bosox and Bostonians for supporting the Bosox. When Big Ed starts in on Sam the ex-big time Bosox player who is now the drunk, Carla has had it with his insults, and physically assaults Big Ed. He in turn threatens to sue unless Sam fires Carla. Sam is in a conundrum as he considers Carla a friend, but she has let her anger get the better of her too many times and if he doesn't do as Eddie requests, he could lose the bar. Sam and Diane convince Carla to see a therapist to deal with her anger issues. To save Carla's job and the bar, Sam too has to convince Ed that in Carla doing so, she is dealing with the issue, and Carla in turn has to demonstrate to Ed that she is both remorseful and changed, which is a tall order since she has ...
