Elderly dementia sufferer Nancy leaves her care home to report that her policeman husband Jimmy, who disappeared in 1956 was actually murdered. Harry Page, an old friend of the couple, reports that Jimmy had gambling debts and got into a fight the night that he died. Sasha takes Nancy back to her old house where she recalls Jimmy's violence and jealousy. A grim secret is discovered in the bedroom wall, in turn leading to the solution of the murder. Meanwhile Steve is called to the police station when his son Stewie is cautioned for minor drug possession, which brings him into conflict with his ex-wife Tricia. They do not part on good terms. The Bellamy household packs up and goes to Scotland when Lord Bellamy is loaned a cottage for a ten day holiday. Virginia, Alice and Rose are in Paris but everyone else, including a reluctant Georgina, goes along. Their reception is anything but warm when Hudson, Edward, Daisy, Ruby and Mrs. Bridges arrive to find that no preparations have been made for them. The ghillie, Roderick McKay and his wife aren't very friendly either. McKay suggests they return to London without delay. When that doesn't work he seems to go out of his way to make their stay unpleasant. As Hudson eventually learns, the ghillie has a secret. Georgina meanwhile dislikes the place from the moment they arrive and is bored. When James reveals his burning love for her, she tells him there can be no future for them and he returns to London. Gently and Bacchus investigate when elderly Alfred Peachment is found murdered in the grounds of the large house where he lived alone, formerly a children's home which he superintended but now closed for several years. The house was being sold, against his wishes, by a committee headed by his ex-wife and her brother, the local doctor, to the seemingly callous property developer Cora Davidson. Harry, Alfred's mute, simple-minded gardener, is the chief suspect and he attacks Bacchus. Only overly helpful local copper Blacksmith seems able to communicate with the boy, causing Bacchus to resent him. A discussion with an old flame leads Gently to suspect that Peachment may have been a paedophile, abusing children in his care, and that any of the suspects may be acting alone or as a group of avengers, to punish him for past misdeeds. Another woman is killed and it seems that each victim gave the murderer the name of an associate, who was then slain. Dr. Llewellyn tells Chandler that Dorothy's killer lost a finger through gangrene and Buchan explains that the gangrene was probably the result of ergot poisoning, which causes madness and paranoia. Simon Bright's girlfriend, Laura Sharp, is nowhere to be found, but the death of the aging village Lothario and the attempted murder of another of her friends narrows the list of possible murderers somewhat.
