Tom Kenderson, Sam's old roommate from his Red Sox days, has just written his autobiography and is launching the book at Cheers since Sam is mentioned in it. Despite Tom asking Sam to read it before the book launch, Sam fails to do so. As the book is launched in front of a few reporters, Sam wishes that he had read it since Tom used the book as his way of coming out, which shocks Sam if only because Tom was a bigger womanizer than even him back then. Sam wants to be supportive of his old friend, but he is also deathly afraid of being construed as being gay himself. His support for Tom eventually wins out, which angers the regulars of the bar, who are afraid that Cheers will turn into a gay bar. Those regulars' concerns extend to being surrounded by what they assume will be stereotypically effeminate accoutrement around the establishment. They are also certain that they could spot a gay man a mile away, and as such they vow to scare off anyone who fits that mold. Sam has to decide ... Written by Huggo

Carla isn't hiding her secret very well: she's pregnant once again. Even though she is showing, she hasn't mentioned her pregnancy to anyone in the bar, nor has anyone in the bar approached her on the subject. Finally she announces that she is pregnant, only delaying the announcement because she wanted to tell the father first. To everyone's surprise, Carla announces that the father is M.I.T. computer geek Marshall Lipton. After talking to Marshall, Diane figures out that Marshall isn't really the father, nor does he know that he isn't. Diane confronts Carla with her deduction, and Carla admits that indeed Marshall is not the father. Carla was feeling alone in the world and wanted someone stable to support her new baby. Diane tries to guilt Carla in admitting the truth to Marshall. If Carla does tell Marshall, he may forgo his position as father. Sam and Coach decide to do what they consider the sure thing by placing a bet against the Celtics, sacrilege in Boston. Is Marshall's prediction actually a sure thing as is a lynching if anyone finds out that they bet against a Boston team? Meanwhile, Diane is distraught to learn that Elizabeth Barrett Browning, her family cat, has passed away. What upsets her equally is the fact that no one in the bar has any understanding of her as a person, this lack of empathy just the latest manifestation. A mysterious man named Eric Finch walks into the bar one evening. He has the persona of James Bond, and does let it slip that he is indeed a spy. Diane doesn't believe his story. Sam reminds her that the bar is a place to escape from reality and if Eric wants to spin this story, real or not, there is no harm. Despite Sam's advice, Diane keeps pressing Eric, and he finally does admit that he has indeed been lying to everyone. This admission deflates everyone in the bar, including Diane, since he was only trying to escape from his hum-drum life. The next story he tells hits a little closer to Diane's sensibilities, and thus she falls under his tales. However, is it the truth? Will the next story he tells be the truth? 85-year old WWI war veteran Buzz Crowder returns to Cheers to meet with surviving members of his squad from the 22nd Brigade. They meet every 10 years at Cheers to reminisce about old times. As the evening progresses, a lonely Buzz realizes that the number of survivors is dwindling. Another new patron to the bar, Kevin, who is a virgin to the world of booze and debauchery, embarks on his first, and last, wild night before entering the monastery. Meanwhile, Diane keeps a collection of memorable quotes that she hears in the bar - snippets of Americana as she calls them. Because Carla and Diane are constantly at each others' throats, Sam wants them to sit down and have a heart-to-heart so that they can come to an amiable working relationship. Although somewhat reluctant because of their mutual dislike for each other, they decide to do it. Much to Sam's consternation, they decide to do it at the bar after hours. To lighten the mood, Carla makes one of her special powerhouse drinks: Leap Into an Open Grave. Once Diane's guard is let down after a few swigs, Carla proceeds to tell a story about Sam being the father of one of her children - Gino - to which she makes Diane swear she will not reveal to anyone. The next day, Carla waits to see if a hungover Diane will indeed keep to her word or if she'll spill the proverbial beans about the secret. Mic, having opened his own law firm in Washington, represents the man and asks for $2.5M. Harm and Bud settle with Mic. The admiral goes on a fishing trip in New Mexico, and Gunny, at his request, goes on a trip, also to New Mexico, to pick up a Marine belatedly accused of desertion (after his action at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea in 1950) and to escort him to Washington. Gunny and his prisoner take a contrived detour, wreck their car, and come under fire, and the admiral joins the firefight. After a resolution of the charge of desertion, the Marine receives the Navy Cross in an official ceremony.
