Ward Bowden is pressing his father Arnold to fight for total ownership of the Ogallala Strip between their ranch and Shiloh that has been shared. A drifter, Jim, comes to the aid of Trampas when Ward leaves him knocked out on a runaway wagon. One of the Bowden hands recognizes him as the gunfighter Ned Mullens from Virginia City leading the Bowdens to believe Shiloh has upped the ante in the conflict. A meeting at Shiloh of the local ranchers erupts into a shouting and pushing match as they argue about how to handle their traditional route to market being blocked by the homesteaders. The detour adds 50 miles hurting the cattle and taking more time. A trio of soldiers are transporting a prisoner across Shiloh property due to a lack of water when they learn after a run in with Trampas it appears the prisoner has scarlet fever. A private runs off with the horses leaving two feuding troopers a foot. Elizabeth and Holly Grainger find the prisoner and troopers stranded inadvertently helping the prisoner escape when Elizabeth runs up to see who is in the wagon. The four walk to Shiloh with the troopers in irons. The Graingers are concerned especially with Elizabeth contracting scarlet fever while Trampas helps the two soldiers who have their own internal feud try to recapture the prisoner. Trampas and two cowhands, Burt and Morgan, drive a herd of cattle to a remote army fort. Trampas must go to Triste, which is almost a ghost town, to receive the $1500 for the herd. However, the owner of the bank is gone so he must wait overnight to get the money. While there he encounters an old friend from Abilene he knew ten years before, Lee Knight, who is a gun fighter tired of life. When he applies for a license for the restaurant with the Justice of Peace, Milo Temple, it is denied because he is Chinese and a very selective law in Medicine Bow. Trampas notices a young lady riding a pinto horse near Shiloh who catches his eye but he is unable to catch her causing The Virginian to question his sightings. The Virginian and Trampas see the girl and her mother leaving the general store in Medicine Bow. Trampas introduces themselves to them. He learns she is Amanda Harley a member of the Harley family on a neighboring ranch they recently purchased. He asks her to the dance in town on Saturday but she rejects the offer. Trampas goes to visit Ida Martin and her son Joe who he stayed with as a child. He finds their home empty and deserted. He runs into a beautiful blond Judy Atkins who was a friend of Joe Martin at a scenic water hole where she goes for quiet time. She tells him he is trespassing which is confirmed by the Lee brothers when Trampas visits the gold mine Joe worked. Ida's neighbor Sam Atkins has bought the Martin place. Trampas drops Stacey at the Medicine Bow depot to leave on the 8:30 pm train to San Francisco to take papers to The Virginian. Stacey leaves his suitcase with the station master while he waits for the train. When he returns to get on the train, he is knocked out. When he awakes, he finds himself in an Army uniform at Fort Killman being dunked in a water trough after being drunk. He lands in the guard house in a cell with Private Martin. When they arrive at Medicine Bow, John and Elizabeth are there along with Trampas to meet the Kohlers. Melanie is highly educated having traveled around the world. When she gives Trampas a tip for handling their luggage at the railroad station, he returns the favor when she holds his hat as he drops her luggage in her room. Jim tells John that he is looking for a place nearby for them to move to but John senses a problem. Melanie and Elizabeth riding run into Trampas. Melanie steals Trampas' cutting horse but falls off. Trampas finding her is forced to kill a threatening mountain lion. He helps her home where a kiss from him leads to her going with a skeptical Trampas to Medicine Bow the next day. While returning from Mexico on business for Shiloh, The Virginian is shot by a rustler while crossing a large Texas ranch. He is rescued by rancher Al Keets and his wife May. Being so remote they host The Virginian while he recovers. The rescue of The Virginian interrupted May's attempt to leave with their son Jimmy to go back to the civilized east. May loves Al but Al won't recognize it believing that she married him for his money to help her father. The problem carries over to how both want to treat their son Jimmy. After sizing up The Virginian, Keets wants The Virginian as his foreman or as a partner. The Graingers visit Medicine Bow where Elizabeth picks up one of many new breeds of chickens she ordered and John visits the bank. Meanwhile, at the saloon Dell Stetler waits at the bar as the other four members of his gang arrive. One is late due to a hurt horse delaying their planned robbery of the bank. As two of the men enter the bank, one member Bob Archer feels something is wrong. As he walks into the street Ryker yells at him from his seat telling him to look up. The buildings are lined with the Sheriff and deputies. Archer is wounded but captured, one man is killed, and the other three escape. Stetler and Cullen Tindall are unharmed but Roy Tindall is severely wounded. Because the hands are all gone on a trail drive for two weeks, the two men take Roy to Shiloh where they take the Graingers who are alone hostage forcing them to tend to Roy and John Grainger to get Dr. Hinton to help. The Virginian arrives in a town to meet Stacey after completing a cattle deal with a local mine. He looks for Stacey who he is to meet there. At the saloon a deputy quickly exits when The Virginian asks about Stacey leaving it to the saloon owner Clara to break the news that Stacey is in jail. At the jail he finds Stacey convicted of murdering the very popular and respected local doctor John Marsh. Stacey is scheduled to hang the next morning. The town acted quickly believing Stacey is guilty after losing his money in a card game and having a dispute with the victim during the game plus two men found him by the dead doctor. The Virginian asks for a delay but the town officials refuse. The local telegraph messages are relayed by horseback preventing speedy access to outside help or Stacey's family. The Virginian must use his detective skills to uncover the truth and skeletons of the town to prove Stacey is innocent. Everyone is reluctant to talk due to the reputation of the doctor but ...
