Potter decides to thrust the greatness of garbage on Frank Burns. Radar saves the life of one of Coner's wounded soldiers, Private Gerald Phelan. Like the Chinese proverb, Radar not only begins to feel responsible for him, but he befriends the young man, as well. Hawkeye was unable to be able with the pretty Nurse Able (Lynette Mettey) and he is very upset; Hawkeye gets some advice from Colonel Potter about having hobbies and unwinding that have some unexpected results. In a classic episode, Frank is lonesome and driving everyone insane. Margaret is in Tokyo at a nurses seminar and he feels absolutely friendless. Potter asks BJ and Hawkeye for a special favor: befriend old Ferret Face. Radar has the toughest duties at the 4077. He has to disturb the officers' slumber if there is an emergency; Margaret is not all sweetness and light when she is wakened. It is Radar's responsibility to safeguard all valuables belonging to wounded patients. When the jeep of Col. The rampant camp fever has the doctors stumped; HQ believes the fever is carried by rat-borne mites and fleas. Fr. Mulcahy is in Seoul, trying to dig up more info on the fever. HQ has also issued a directive regarding a contest, Soldier of the Month, to be judged by second in command. But Ferret Face is also Rat Officer; he is a busy boy. Frank totally misses the lack of renal output from the fever victims, disagrees with the idea of restricting fluid intake, as expected. (The disease, hemorrhagic fever, is more common sense medicine than anything else.) Frank comes down with the fever and is extremely sick; he cannot judge the contest. Incoming wounded include a Captain who identifies himself to Radar and the doctors as Jesus Christ. He does not appear to be bucking for a Section 8 and seems placid and harmless. Potter thinks Hawkeye is a pip, as he has a comeback for everything. But Frank's Purple Heart (for an egg fragment in his eye) is no joke and Hawkeye does not find it funny. The 38th Parallel Medical Conference: just an excuse for boozing one's brains out! Radar drives the 4077 bus back to camp with Potter and the 3 doctors and realizes they are lost. When they stop the bus, it will not start again. They have no food, water, communication, blankets or maps and it is nightfall; plus, Hawkeye is hung over. Frank is secretly hoarding chocolate and talking gibberish on one-half of a set of busted walkie-talkies. BJ suggests the guys tell fun stories when Radar goes to the latrine. Ah, the cleanliness of military war: one hand washes another. After 30 years, Sgt. Kimble is going home; his medical records must be fixed so he travels by boat and not by air: Kimble is bringing home tons of restaurant ware to open his own Korean cafe stateside. Klinger and BJ are mystified; Hawkeye's father called the 4077 in the middle of the night and asked for BJ. When a morgue attendant, Digger, tries to retrieve the body of one Capt. BF Pierce and shows the death certificate, things start making sense. Eisenhower is coming and all the lines are tied up; Hawkeye is going crazy over how his dad is taking the news. BJ tries to put a fun spin on it and hosts a wake for his buddy: not only is there a eulogy, but there is also rebuttal. But the death thing finally wears at Hawkeye and he plans to go home. Henry is dead and the casualties keep coming. Trapper went home; that did not even slow down the flow of wounded. It is a long night of nerve-wracking shelling and artillery. One of BJ's black patients is fading, which is not helping the 97.8% health rate enjoyed by the 4077. With B+ type blood, which, is neither rare nor common, BJ, Hawkeye and Margaret are all worried. Luckily, Klinger is B+ and his swarthy Lebanese carcass is conveniently located in the next bed. Radar is scared to death when he is asked to wake Colonel Potter, but the old guy jumps to attention. He calls strange officers as well as his own pals to get the shelling to stop. To take the sting out of working a night shift with Hawkeye, Hotlips writes a sweet love note to Frank: she watches in disbelief as he tears it up. It is 19 Sept 1952; the Army sends a full bird Colonel, Sherman Tecumseh Potter, veteran of WWI and WWII, to command the 4077. In a contrived plot where Hawkeye takes a separate RandR in Tokyo from fellow Swamp Rat, Trapper, Hawkeye returns back to the 4077 in a rickshaw. In one of the best remembered and most emotional episodes of the entire 11 year series, Radar has an announcement for Henry in O.R. Henry Blake has received his discharge: he is finally going home to Bloomington, Illinois, to his wife, Lorraine, and their children, the country club and his medical practice. The entire 4077 gang is thrilled for Henry and they wish him well; gifts are gotten, parties are thrown and all sorts of final memories are made. But, the entire gang is sad to be losing such an integral part of the 4077 gang. Radar, in particular, is losing the man who was a father to him. The final farewell formation is memorable; even Hawkeye and Trapper show up to tell their friend and leader a fond farewell. Some farewells are fonder than others. Klinger dresses to kill. Three masked men try to steal penicillin from the 4077 supply shed; during gun play, one gets caught in Klinger's boa. The young man's tags read Cpl. Charles P. Perkins, but his voice says little. The 4077 poster boy for Crazy In Army (CIA) Colonel Flagg (Edward Winter) shows up, posing as a rabbi, Capt. Goldberg and wearing ridiculous glasses. Flagg tells Henry: We don't joke in the CIA. But someone has a sense of the absurd. Radar finds out that Perkins was KIA, but Flagg demands to interrogate the young man, whoever he is. Flagg frees Perkins, and inflicts several injuries to his own person. Flagg meant for the 4077 to believe he was ambushed and overtaken by Perkins but Trapper and Hawkeye are wise to the insanity that is Col. Flagg. The officers learn interesting facts about the dedication of their brothers in medicine, like Medic Johnson of the 415th Army Infantry. They also want to know how Flagg takes his coffee. In the Army's infinite wisdom, Hawkeye is named Payroll Officer for the enlisted men at the 4077 and Radar pays the officers. Hawkeye has $10 left from the enlisted pay; Radar looks at the scrip like he is facing a firing squad. Blake is ordered to make certain Klinger stays de-frocked. Looking for kudos back home (and higher fees on tonsillectomies) Blake orders all troops to de-shambilize the 4077. The entire camp is white-washed, festooned in red, white and blue, and parade viewing stands proudly adorn the compound. A brief inspection of Mac's VIP quarters is more than enough for Hotlips to achieve lift off (even with Ferret Face.) At the rehearsal, Radar is a corn-cob smoking stand-in for the man of the hour. But, there are excruciating SNAFUs lurking beneath the usual ones labeled Situations Normal. Even Radar drops his pipe. But, Klinger burns. I Company aid station sustained heavy shelling; 4077 are to provide trained personnel until replacements arrive. A surgeon was KIA, and they need a cutter, scrub nurse and a corpsman. Hotlips volunteers. The doctors draw sausages and Hawkeye is drafted; Fr. Mulcahy picks Klinger's card for corpsman duty. Everyone is scared to death; they cover with jokes. Grumpy calls Snow White to check in; the conditions are appalling. There is no roof and no running water; few of the walls are standing. After Hawkeye makes an insulting remark about Margaret, Frank snaps him with a towel and Hawkeye responds with a nicely placed right cross to Frank's eye. Hawkeye is then placed under house arrest and instead of being treated like a criminal, he is treated like a conquering hero for what he did even to the point of getting some very tasty water buffalo steak and having movies shown in the Swamp. In the meantime, Colonel Reese, the woman in charge of all the nurses in Korea, arrives to observe Margaret and her staff and, for some strange reason, becomes attracted to Frank and tries to seduce him. Hawkeye recounts the well rounded day of insanity, of the previous OR session, on a tape recorder for his father. It starts with a bus full of wounded UN soldiers; Frank is supposed to be in charge of their triage. One soldier, wrapped in a tight sandwich stretcher, is a Turk whom even Klinger calls crazy. With a drugstore already pumped into the Turk's arm, he is still able to slice through canvas, wounds and all, and wave a huge knife at the triage team. Frank is chicken, so Klinger has to give the Turk more morphine. But, the Turkish Rasputin wakes up again, before his surgery; he yells, sedates Henry and escapes. A Luxembourg lieutenant was supposed to be on the bus, but he cannot be found. U.S. soldier, Lt. Smith, really wants Sgt. Bryan taken out of the jeep and given immediate top priority.
