The crux of their argument is over plans for their friends who are getting married before the year ends. Problems with the arrangements cause them to lose their original location and so it is suggested that they have it in the Stivic's living room. Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the death of Karen Burdett who jumped - or was pushed - out of her apartment window. They initially suspect suicide but the crime scene unit confirms she was thrown off the balcony. Her husband Josh dismisses suicide at first but then confirms that she may have been depressed over giving up their three week old daughter for adoption. He says they gave her up because he didn't want children, but when the police learn the baby is African-American, they begin looking for her boyfriend. The fact is that Josh Burdett is actually African American but has passed as white all of his life. Even his first wife - to whom he was married for 19 years - denies ever knowing he was black. He had been seen with a young woman and there is every indication that she was in the apartment with him. Monroe was a hardworking African-American student, an upstanding young man whose only mark against him was a juvenile conviction when he was 12. A library book in his apartment leads them to Danielle Mason. She admits to having met Charlie at the library and then going to his apartment where he attacked and raped her. The evidence doesn't add up but when McCoy hesitates seeking an indictment, the case takes on racial overtones with Mason's lawyer arguing his client is being railroaded under pressure from the African-American community. A security guard shoots her first....end of case. Lt Van Buren however wants them to find out what the woman meant when she screamed that her husband killed her baby. She supposedly had a miscarriage but the fertility doctor she was seeing, Jordan Delbert, raises concerns when he clearly lies to the police. A review of his files reveals something else however: to cut expenses, Delbert began to use his own sperm to inseminate his patients. He was found in an alleyway but had $2200 in his coat pocket and the detectives later learned that he has a $15000 trust account managed by Richard Gilrich, an advocate for the homeless. The block association lost a court case which is where the money came from as they were clearly violating his rights. As a result, he continues to terrorize the neighborhood having once pushed a child in front of a moving car. On the night he was beaten, he had attacked a woman, Irene Morrissey, and her husband apparently decided to teach him a lesson. They investigate several possible leads and eventually arrest the dead woman's ex-boyfriend who had previously had a dust up with the dead man. They develop doubts however and soon learn from one of Jamie's college classmates that Jamie was home when he was supposed to be with his mother.
