The wagon train staff is giving Coop a hard time about joining the Pulaski family for dinner where the daughter Rose has Coop all but tied up. Coop and the gorgeous Rose Pulaski are falling in love with each other after running into each other before the wagon train left to go west. However, when Coop arrives for dinner he recognizes Rose's brother Sam causing Coop to recall their past. Coop recognizes him as the leader of a gang that beat and robbed him in Brooklyn at Hell's Kitchen a while earlier. Sam asks Coop to say nothing about the incident to which Coop agrees when Sam tells Coop he is coming west to change his ways. However, Sam omits that two of his confederates have also joined the train and they are running a protection racket - under Sam's orders. Rose has an idea how Sam has made a living since the age of 12 but their mom has no clue. This time Caleb Lefton is having trouble. Bill has been helping him practice driving his team. He is slowing learning but the delays are straining the patience of businessman Martin Gatsby who wants to get west to open a new business. He is traveling with his wife and two hands: Jeb Colton, ex-wagon master and a Mexican cook named Arizona. Martin is complaining to Chris about the delays and Chris' own rules of the train which may force Chris to leave the Leftons behind. Chris reminds Martin that he too is violating the rules due to an overloaded wagon with an expensive dresser and wood stove along with unneeded camping accessories. Alex Lamont is a womanizing gambler on the wagon train. He persuaded the old maid Martha Lane to loan him $500 which he promised to pay back. Her brother, Frank, dislikes him. However, Alex lost $2000 so he needs another $1500 which he owes Robert Waring who wants his money - fast. Martha is distraught as she watches Alex fawn over the young Ginny Becket and her equally beautiful mother Mary who is a widowed school teacher. Mary has tried to warn Ginny about Alex but to no avail. As Waring increases the pressure on Alex due to Waring wanting to leave the wagon train, Alex has to speed up his move on Mary who has $3000 saved. He allows Ginny to see him passionately kiss Mary while the wagon train is having a dance. Ginny, upset, is mad at her mother and is taken in by the Lanes. Flint finds a stagecoach destroyed and the driver and shotgun dead. Suddenly he is shot in the arm creating a minor flesh wound. The shooter is Kitty Allbright who was a passenger and thought Flint was an attacker. He disarms her and tells her who he is. She asks if the wagon train has horses as she wants one to ride to her nearby hometown so her parents won't worry. She tells Flint she is returning from England where she became a registered nurse at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing while her parents thought she was in France attending a music school. Nursing has a bad reputation in the United States so she asks Flint to let her join the wagon train to prove her training works. Judge Garth and Betsy returning from cattle meetings in Montana are two of eight passengers on a stagecoach which is attacked during a rest stop. Besides the Garths the passengers include an older couple, a young couple, and two men one of who is a personable and exuberant sewing machine peddler. They race to the Sundown way station that is heavily fortified but the driver is killed on the way there. The way station was once a Montana Territorial Prison that has been decommissioned. The station master is an ex prisoner who suffers from battle fatigue. Judge Garth learns from the gang leader that they want a man named George Wilson but no one in the group uses that name. Garth is able to deduce who Wilson is and Wilson comes forward telling them that he used to be part of the outlaw band but betrayed them and they want revenge.
