Hockey is on the minds of Avonlea residents. In her role as Superintendent of Schools, Muriel Stacey, bringing news from the Board of Education, institutes a mandatory Physical Education class, the suggested sport of choice being hockey. The Physical Education class is against the wishes of Hetty, who sees the class as taking away other more important academically inclined subjects, and Sara, who doesn't know how to skate. Meanwhile, sawmill owner, Archie Gillis, is holding tryouts for his hockey team, the Avonlea Avengers. He has instituted some arbitrary standards for team members, which excludes many, including perhaps some of the best hockey players in Avonlea, such as Andrew. Andrew is excited about the upcoming visit to Avonlea by his father, the missing King sibling, Roger King. Roger, a nationally renowned geologist, has completed his work in Brazil and is ready to take Andrew back after the year in which Andrew's Uncle Alec acted as his guardian.
