Detectives Briscoe and Green investigate the murder of 15 year-old Christie Garrison who is found just outside her building with her head bashed in. The girl comes from a very wealthy family and the police first suspect Sammy Morris who worked for their friend and neighbor, Mark Vance, as his chauffeur. Morris is cleared and the police learn Christie had gone out to a club after her parents thought she'd gone to bed. She left the club with a boy - who turns out to be the neighbor's youngest son, Ethan Vance. His older brother Nick seems to have had sex with her prior to her death as did Ethan and they are both arrested for statutory rape. The solution to the murder lie elsewhere however. When a 5 year-old Ryan Downing dies from exposure to a rare bacteria, VRSA, the police don't know if they're dealing with a one off incident or a planned attack. They first focus on the on the Downing's nanny, but she is quickly cleared. The medical examiner thinks the boy was likely injected with VRSA - she finds a small puncture mark - and when a junkie named Clarence dies of the same disease, his needles indicate they were used on the Downing boy. The boy's father Aaron was having an affair with a co-worker Theresa Copeland and becomes their prime suspect. Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the death of Nancy O' Neal, the victim of a drive-by shooting while she was returning home with her husband Marty. The husband's story doesn't stand up to scrutiny but the truth - that he was in that neighborhood to buy a diamond ring from a fence - makes more sense. They locate the fence who saw three men in the area where the shooting took place. They quickly track down the shooter, Elias Camacho, but Jamie Ross notes an anomaly in O'Neal's time of death and it appears the hospital prepared to harvest Nancy O'Neal's organs before she was officially declared to have died. Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the death of Karen Marsh who, it seems, jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge. They soon establish that she had been in a fender bender and the driver of the other car forced her out of her car and chased her. She apparently leaped off the bridge to get away from him. Karen had been without a job since the shoe factory she worked in burned down some six months before. She had recently visited her old boss, Harold Dorning and he thought she was just fine. They eventually trace her attacker, Crazy Mike McDugan a man with a violent temper and a criminal record for assault. He admits to the road rage incident but insists that she jumped off the bridge on her own. The best the DA's office can get is an indictment for assault - until they learn that his one-time prison roommate was a professional arsonist which makes them look into the fire at the factory where she worked and her old boss. Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the murder of a young African-American boy who is found dead in the park. In his pocket is a note identical to that used by another killer of young black boys but who is still in prison for those crimes. The police think they may have a copy cat killer on their hands but when they get a confession from a security guard that he was responsible for all of the murders - including those from 5 years ago - evidence begins to mount that McCoy and his assistant at the time, Diana Hawthorne, may have railroaded the original defendant and not provided the defense with exculpatory evidence. The dead woman from the accident had been sexually assaulted and was being driven to the hospital by a co-worker who ran off after the car accident. It turns out they both worked for a highly respected and generally popular city councilman, Spencer Talbot. He denies rape of course but the police learn that he may have assaulted the office manager at his former law firm as well as an associate, Sarah Maslin. When Maslin later admits that Talbot forced her to have sex with him by threatening to withhold a much deserved partnership in the firm, ADA McCoy decides to try something else: Talbot is charged with larceny by extortion. The caller's voice is masked but the caller threatens to harm their young daughter unless he's paid $20,000. The police set a trap when the payoff is made and the pick-up man says he has no idea as to the identity of the man who hired him. He does have a make of car and recalls a unique decal on the windshield. With that the detectives believe the culprit is an Appellate Court judge, Joel Thayer. ADA Claire Kincaid begs Ben Stone to take her off the case but he sees no reason to. When the charges against Thayer are dropped, he files a complaint against Claire and she is formally censured. She admits they had once had an affair and resigns. Stone is convinced of Thayer's guilt and redoubles his efforts to find evidence against him. Written by garykmcd
