Unknown to everyone in the valley, two young men - opinionated Arthur Gilroy and his friend Lowell Rightmeyer who does whatever Arthur says - both strangers to the valley, are on their way to rob the bank in Pixley. They change their plans when they learn that the next day, the Cannonball, without any armed guards, will make its express run from Hooterville to Pixley for the bank shipment. Arthur and Lowell decide to stay the night at the Shady Rest and stop the train the next day by placing a barricade on the tracks so that they can hold it up. Kate and the family are happy to have who they see as two polite and handsome young men stay with them. However, when Arthur and Lowell do hold up the train the next day, they are unprepared for Kate and Uncle Joe also being on the train, they who recognize the masked bandits. The new president of Euclid College, Dr. Charles Cromwell, is doing his best to ensure that a major donor to the college isn't offended in any way. James Vardon is going to receive an honorary degree at the upcoming commencement exercises and has promised the college a donation of $1 million. As a result, Cromwell is walking on egg shells and pretty well letting Vardon's assistant Robert Haskell, walk all over him. Cromwell is shocked when a woman arrives at he college in a taxi looking for someone named Curly. She is literally falling down drunk and the taxi whisks her away. She's soon in the hospital and it's revealed that Cromwell is the old friend she is looking for. He had met her long ago and she has left him a small bequest in her will. He visits Perry Mason worried that the will may become public and the impact it would have if Vardon or his assistant should ever hear about it. Madame Elizabeth McQueeny presents Major Adams papers from officials in Washington D.C. requesting he take her and her group to the west with the wagon train. She tells the Major that she plans to open a girls finishing school in the west to introduce them to new wealthy pioneers there. Adams willingly takes her and her girls on the train. The son of the Blower family, Stanley, works as a driver for McQueeny. One of the girls Roxanne rides with him and the two eventually develop a close relationship resulting in Roxanne telling him they are all actually entertainers which is considered a degrading position for women. When word spreads to the women of the camp, they demand Adams evict the group from the train at the first safe opportunity putting the Major into the position of having to comply. However, when Stanley and others develop the disease spotted fever, it is McQueeny who takes charge and knows how to handle the disease. Her and her girls handle the victims is a quarantine area...
