In 2007 lecturer Richard Symes fell off a roof at the university where he taught and died. An open verdict was recorded but Brian feels that suicide was unlikely as Symes had just taken a whole load of books out of the London Library. Brian loves going undercover at the library (It smells of books) where he is befriended by the Urquharts, a couple of elderly lecturers who knew the dead man. Symes' widow Paula tells Sandra her husband was regarded as a dinosaur and sacked by vice-chancellor Ventham,but he claims that Symes was stealing books from the university library to sell in Paula's shop,which Paula admits. Her young lover Tim was also part of the racket. Brian works out that the Urquharts are trying to locate one of the books Symes stole,a priceless first edition which he hid somewhere in the London Library. Dr Valerie Cullen is found dead, holding a syringe, and colleague Dr Plant suggests suicide, telling Gently that she was depressed at the onset of motor neurone disease. Estranged husband Andrew, also a doctor, agrees but when he finds Valerie's office ransacked and her dog killed Gently suspects foul play with Andrew the likely culprit. Valerie was a popular visitor to Norman, an unofficial patient dying of emphysema contracted from working at an asbestos factory where Andrew was the medical officer. Given that other workers have also died Gently suspects that Valerie was attempting to expose criminal negligence at the factory and somebody was out to prevent her. At the same time Bacchus is thrilled to hear that he has been promoted to inspector but sad to learn that Gemma has gone back with Nunn and is moving to London with him. Written by don @ minifie-1

Finding that a saboteur has cut the aviary nets and Muriel is reluctant to spy for him at the council George is not in the best of moods when he and Lizzie approach lawyer Neville Kelly to represent them at the appeal, finding him mercenary and dispassionate. He plans to represent himself but is dissuaded by Lizzie and certainly Kelly serves them well, proving Mrs Radler to be a liar and Webb to be motivated by his desires for Lizzie. Lady Katherine gives an excellent character witness and the case goes against the obnoxious councillor Tipping with information Frankie gives Billy. As a result there is an inspection of the zoo, resulting in the approval of its opening. Eighty years later it is still one of the most visited wildlife attractions in Britain. Adam, the male bear, escapes and although George and Billy manage to retrieve him before he reaches the village, George is injured in June's sight and confined to bed. He knows he must finish the bears' enclosure but the bank will not supply any more funds. Fortunately he meets Lady Katherine's friend Lady Goodwin, an eccentric aristocrat who supports him and who stages a glamorous benefit evening at Selbourne Hall, hosted by Lady Katherine and to which Camilla Radler's postman son Archie escorts Muriel. The evening goes well until one of the guests accuses Katherine of being an adulteress. Furthermore Mrs Radler and the duplicitous Webb are gathering signatures to close the zoo, leading to planning permission being denied and a confrontation between Webb and George. Harry and Douglas, helped by Sylvia, rescue the ailing king from hospital and bundle him into an ambulance with a view to sending him to safety in America. A flat tyre leads them to seek assistance at a farm house where they are almost betrayed and need to move on, arranging to meet Resistance leader Mayhew at the airfield. However they have walked into a trap - which at least draws Nazi attention away from the destruction of the bomb factory, as Douglas discovers a lesson in treachery.
