While out for a stroll, Detective Murdoch and Dr. Ogden soon find they have a murder on their hands when an attractive young woman is found strangled in the park. When Murdoch and Constable Crabtree search the woman's lodgings, they find some very risqué photographs of the young woman leading them straight to a known pornographer, Marcus Evans. He denies having anything to do with the young woman's death but Murdoch is shocked to find photos of Sally Pendrick, whose husband James he has long suspected of criminal activity. Mrs. Pendrick eventually admits to having posed for the photos and that she is now being blackmailed. When Murdoch accompanies her to a meeting with her blackmailer, they are nearly killed but it all seems too easy for Murdoch who thinks someone was out to kill her all along. Dr. Ogden meanwhile is growing impatient with her life. Her romance with Murdoch seems to be going nowhere and she is now seriously considering an offer to practice medicine away from Toronto. Detective Murdoch investigates a bizarre case when a convicted murderer apparently manages to survive the hangman's noose. When Cecil Fox's body is delivered to Dr. Ogden for a post-mortem, she finds a hollow tube inserted in his throat and Fox very much alive. It seems the managed to survive by inserting the tube, thus allowing him to breathe, and by having the hangman's rope shortened so as to ensure that his neck isn't broken. Murdoch and Brackenreid immediately focus on the hangman, Theodore Pleasant, as being complicit in the escape. Brackenreid and Pleasant are good friends but the police Inspector has to admit that it doesn't look good for his friend. With Crabtree and Higgins manning a stakeout, Murdoch realizes that there may have been a miscarriage of justice and that Fox was in fact innocent of the crime for which he was convicted. Detective Murdoch is on the case when police discover two bodies at a building construction site. Their initial estimate is that the bodies have been there for about 5 years but the remains are found in a peat bog and as a result are very well preserved. Both bodies, one man and one woman, are approximately 40 years old and Dr. Ogden's examination reveals that they were both poisoned with cyanide. Further evidence however shows that both bodies have been there for at least 22 years. But that's incorrect as well as further evidence then points to 1836 as the likely year of death. Murdoch manages to locate locate the now elderly daughter of the victims, Rebecca Hastings and her husband Charlie. He also realizes that either she or her husband killed her parents or possibly one of the three foster children who also lived there at the time, Alice Nugent, Horace Mooney or Michael Webster. The dead man turns out to be a well-known member of the Eugenics Society. Dr. Ogden sees her sister Ruby and is somewhat shocked by her dalliance with the often married Wells. Detective Murdoch deals with an interesting assortment of suspects when a circus animal trainer Kitty Walker is found dead, apparently attacked by the tiger in her charge. When the circus tries to leave town hurriedly, Murdoch has them all arrested and the station house is soon filled a variety of exotic characters. The manager, Pierre Barnett, had found her half-eaten inside inside the tiger's cage and it all seems to be nothing more than an accident until Dr. Ogden's autopsy reveals the animal had likely been starved for several days before the attack. Her autopsy of Kitty also shows that she was murdered - and not by the tiger, but stabbed in the throat. Kitty's best friend Ivy points the finger at the hirsute Count Leoline who in turn points to the magician. He soon finds the thieves, both dead, but there is no sign of the painting. They were professional thieves from Chicago and Murdoch determines that it is all part of a scheme to sell forgeries of the painting in question. Detective Murdoch finds himself in competition with another police officer when he investigates the death of Humphrey Breen who has apparently fallen, or was pushed, out of a third floor window. Murdoch investigates the apparent murder of a young woman whose death was clearly made to look like a suicide. From the young woman's calloused index finger, Murdoch knows that victim was a telegraph operator. He knows this as his new friend Enid is also a one-time telegrapher and she works closely with Murdoch, much to Dr. Ogden's dismay. They soon learn that the dead woman may have been carrying on, at least over the telegraph wires, with another telegrapher with the initials AK. They set up a trap for him but Enid takes offense when Murdoch uses her own information to set a trap. Another body narrows the field of possible suspects but it becomes apparent that the mystery man knows who Enid is. Inspector Brackenreid has been trying to keep away from liquor - his wife is now in the temperance league - and has been taking injections. After chasing a suspect, Detective Murdoch has a serious fall and finds himself bedridden with several broken bones and a nasty gash on his arm. He's cared for by a concerned Dr. Julia Ogden who has him on his way to recovery but leaves when an equally concerned Enid Jones arrives. After Murdoch's landlady goes away suddenly to care for her sick sister, the bedridden Murdoch begins hearing strange noises in the house but can't quite locate them or who might be making the noise. When he becomes feverish and his condition deteriorates, Enid seeks out Julia's help. In the end, the night vision goggles he's been building prove to be quite useful. While Murdoch is recuperating, Constable Crabtree takes over as acting detective and continues to investigate the murder. The victim is Professor Ezra Delamore, a mathematician who now works for a major industrialist. Dr. Ogden confirms that the man was poisoned and the fatal dose was administered in a unique way. When young Alwyn disappears, they find a dwarf floating in the river while looking for him, also poisoned. Also involved in the case is the very secretive government agent Terence Meyers. Murdoch and Dr. Ogden's relationship has yet to unthaw but she seems to be coming around slowly. It all may be for naught as the detective has decided to make a social call on Mrs. Jones. The autopsy reveals that the dead woman had been drinking absinthe and shows no defensive wounds but did have old scarring from possibly having been whipped. In addition to the artist, suspicion falls on a prominent judge who eventually admits he awoke in the dead woman's room and found her dead, but remembers nothing else. When a young Harry Houdini visits Toronto with his stage act, he soon finds himself under police scrutiny when the bank next door to the theater in which he is performing is robbed. A bank guard, Joe Decker, was killed during the robbery. Dr. Ogden and several police officers, including Murdoch and Insp. Brackenreid, were in the audience at the time. For Dr. Ogden the biggest surprise of the evening is that her younger sister Ruby, a reporter and writer, appears on stage as Houdini's assistant. When the autopsy reveals that the dead man's blood has turned black, it would seem that he was poisoned. Brackenreid is convinced that Houdini, who was locked in a safe for over 11 minutes during one of his escape routines, is the culprit but Murdoch is far from convinced. At the appropriate time their host, Barkely Blake, is set to reveal his latest find from the fields of Alberta. A religious fanatic interrupts the proceedings but when the dinosaur is shown, the gigantic skeleton has a body in its jaws. The dead man turns out to be Lukas DeWitt, a member of Blake's last expedition. Dr. Ogden believe that DeWitt was shot but using a new photographic device that takes special pictures with x-rays, they are unable to locate a bullet. As Murdoch investigates, there is no shortage of suspects, including one of Blake's rivals, Professor Rudolph Sutton. Using a new invention, an ultra violent light, he finds where the murders took place. He also discovers one thing that both victims had in common. While attending Buffalo Bill Cody's Western Extravaganza, Det. Murdoch, Insp. Brackenreid, Constable Crabtree and Dr. Ogden witness a killing when a stunt apparently goes bad. The stunt involved one legendary wild west gunman shooting the other who catches the bullet in his teeth. It's all trickery of course and he's not supposed to be shot for real. Murdoch determines that the man was actually shot by someone with a rifle. When the second member of the stunt team is also killed, Murdoch starts looking into their past to find a solution to the crime. A horse hair provides the vital clue. Insp. Brackenreid's wife has joined the temperance league and he has promised to give up drink. An encounter with the flirtatious Annie Oakley puts an end to that. Written by garykmcd

There were no footprints leading up to tree so they have no theories as to how he may have gotten there. Gaston was an avid astronomer with a particular fascination about Mars and Constable Crabtree begins to think that Martians may be responsible. Murdoch however suspects a more human perpetrator, especially when he learns that Gaston was refusing to sell his land to a developer.
