While working, Joe hears a voice. He finds the one talking to him. The man says he's the doctor who wiped out Joe's memory. After doing the procedure on Joe, he told the people who told him to do it, he doesn't want to do it anymore. But they didn't care what he wanted, so he destroyed all his research material. They then used his device on him. It's only recently he was able to piece everything. He wants Joe to retrieve the device. And if he does, the doctor says he will undo what he did to Joe.
