Frank, under stress at home now that he and Catherine have separated, is sent to Arkansas to investigate allegations of child abuse at a day care center. Although he questions why the Group would be interested in such a case, he is told that he needs to confront pure evil. Soon after he arrives, he confronts Lara Means, a psychiatrist investigating the case from the opposite angle, only to discover that they were both sent by Millennium. When a young boy turns up dead during nap time, the owner of the day care center is arrested and questioned. Although Frank has his suspicions about who the real killer is, he soon finds himself behind bars after a young girl accuses him of hitting her during an interview. The caller sounded like her dead sister Melissa. When she sees the dead woman's little girl, Emily, she is convinced that she's Melissa's child. Birth records confirm that the young girl had been adopted and Scully's examination of the dead woman leads her to believe she was killed. Scully orders DNA tests that prove to be quite informative.
