When Mel Price, the station manager, mentions at a party at Mary's place that he needs to fill one hour's worth of variety time on the network since the existing talent has left, Ted volunteers. Ted and Georgette do a corny, simplistic skit for Mel that they did at a church function. Mel loves their husband/wife chemistry and gives them an on-air audition. Mel loves their audition, and the Minneapolis public loves their resulting show, much to the surprise of Lou, Mary and Murray, who can't understand the appeal of the corny material. Mary's feeling doesn't stop her from agreeing to appear on the show to describe her work. Another person who is surprised at the success of the show is Georgette, who increasingly hates the job to the point of tears. It's the time of the year for the Teddy Awards again. Ted, as usual, is stepping up his campaign to woo the Teddy Awards nominating committee and voters with his week long supposed deeds of do-gooding. Just before the nominations are to be announced, Lou hears through the grapevine that Ted didn't even get nominated this year. Lou wants Ted to hear the news from a friend rather than when the nominations are officially announced. Lou didn't however hear about who is being bestowed the Albert Mason Award, an award he despises both for its origins - Albert Mason being a crook who only originated the award as a tax write-off - and the fact that it is given to over-the-hill newspeople who have nothing left in their news careers. Woody is having a spat in name only with 'Larry Bird' of the Boston Celtics who is originally from French Lick, Indiana, from where people of Hanover, Indiana are considered the dufuses of the state. Hanover residents have the same opinion of French Lick residents. With the rest of the gang, they're preparing for the next contest with Gary's Olde Towne Tavern, namely a three-on-three basketball game of bar employees. Gary hires a couple of extremely tall ringers. Sam goes one step further and hires Boston Celtic, Kevin McHale. Sam tells Kevin that the game is for charity - an orphanage - to persuade him to do this for him.
