In 2001 pathologist Bob Ruxton gave a verdict of accidental death on palaeontologist Bernard Fletcher, who died from a supposed fall at a dinner given by Mondial Oil Company in Bernard's museum. Now that verdict is declared unsound and the UCOS team reopen the case. Bernard supported ecology and disapproved of Mondial's work but, though married, he was a ladies' man having an affair with colleague Marie Braden. Marie's ex-boyfriend, Mark Slater quit the museum to set up as a trader in fossils, a lucrative business and it was alleged that Bernard sacked him for stealing exhibits. Mark would also seem to be the lover of Sarah, wife of James Winslow, Mondial's managing director. Bernard was certainly murdered but was the motive marital jealousy or greed? Evolutionary zoologist Professor Nick Cutter has still not come to terms with the disappearance of his wife Helen eight years ago. She is on his mind when he goes to the Forest of Dean with his friends Stephen Hart (an expert tracker) and Connor Temple (an archaeology student and avid conspiracy theorist) to investigate some reports of a large animal at large there. After finding some damage done by something large with claws they retire to a local hotel bar where Cutting is approached in a matter sure to get his immediate attention by Claudia Brown, a young employee of the Home Office, and the four set off back into the forest to try to find whatever made those claw marks and did that damage. Coincidentally, peroxide blonde Abby Maitland, a zoo keeper devoted to reptiles (especially lizards, iguanas, and chameleons), hears that day from her boss that, despite her dedication to her work, she'll soon be out of a job because of budget cuts. Lady Clem makes it clear that she will block any divorce as Martha moves back with her father, who is now living with Joy Dangerfield. Caro demands to see her son but the family informs her that he is dead and she attempts suicide. She is rescued by Bairstow who locates the child and brings him to Caro, who in turn takes him to see the Middletons, John making a full recovery, thanks to Phoebe's speech therapy. Edmund attempts to sack Bairstow but is thwarted when the agent threatens to reveal his sexuality. Bill Gibby, whose party is out of power but is leader of the city council in Sheffield, returns. He is anxious to build a reservoir to bring clean water to Sheffield but it will involve flooding the village as Grace discovers, announcing the plan to the villagers, who give her whole-hearted support in opposing it. As John lies in a coma two hectoring policemen arrive, more intent on proving the villagers were trespassing than finding out who shot John. Grace seeks help from Bill, whose declaration of love for sets tongues wagging. Principled George, a journalist, is leaned on by his family to demonize the ramblers and by the police to incriminate Gilbert, Bert and Gerard, refusing the latter. He is under more stress when Martha leaves him for Gerard, though the Allinghams will not sanction a divorce.
