Maxwell decides to take a weekend trip to London to see Céline Dion in concert and to try and persuade her to star in one of his shows. Val talks Fran into following him to London so that they can rekindle the passion they experienced in Paris. Once in London, Maxwell puts up a valiant fight but quickly falls under Fran's spell. They are just about to do it for the first time when Maxwell decides that he can't fall prey to his urges for this specific situation, which to him feels like a one night stand instead of a long term commitment, which is what he wants. But their resulting fight and trip to London is cut short when word comes back from New York that Niles suffered a heart attack. Everyone is distraught, even C.C. who admits that her seemingly dysfunctional relationship with Niles is really one of love. In Niles' drug induced sleep, he apparently feels the same. When Maxwell takes the wrong bag for his flight to Paris (he has taken a bag containing C.C.'s dog, Chester), Fran rushes to the airport to catch him. She manages to get on board, and inadvertently stows away in the closet as the plane takes off. In Paris, Fran is forced to share a room with Maxwell since the city is busy with tourists in town to see the latest Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. But Maxwell has business to take care of, namely to talk his freewheeling younger brother, Nigel, out of buying a Parisian nightclub. Instead, Nigel shows Maxwell that he has lost his joie de vivre. Maxwell decides he needs to take life by the horns. He and Fran grab the next available flight back to New York. That may have been a mistake as the plane develops some technical problems and it looks as if it may go down. Fran, with Brighton in tow, is mugged in the park. Although they're physically unharmed, they're both traumatized. In the process, Fran's purse was stolen. Maxwell and C.C. also end up being traumatized because Fran mistook a priceless piece of Shakespeare's notebook on Maxwell's desk for her errand list, the parchment which ended up being in her stolen purse. Maxwell was intending on loaning the parchment to a museum for a sold out benefit. They may all be in luck when the police catch who they believe to be the mugger. Despite the mugger having a stocking over his head at the time, Fran is able to identify him in a line-up. But her purse and its contents are gone forever. Further to Fran's horror, the mugger is ordered to do community service and is let go. But in another run-in with the mugger at the park, Fran finds a more caring individual who returns the Shakespeare parchment. But does he have ulterior motives? Mother's Day is approaching, and as usual, Maxwell is trying to preoccupy the children so that they won't think about their mother, Sara. Fran, on the other hand, thinks it a good idea to talk to the kids about their mother. This year just prior to Mother's Day, Maxwell and the family have joined a new country club. Scoping out the club, Maxwell, Fran and Grace learn that the club is having Mother's Day festivities, including a mother-daughter pageant. Grace wants to enter the pageant with Fran, which Maxwell thinks not a good idea since he believes Grace will ultimately grieve the loss of Sara again. However, Maxwell ultimately gives in to Grace's wishes. But on Mother's Day after one of the competing mother-daughter's - ultra competitive Bobbi Jo and Betty Jo - deem Fran and Grace ineligible for the pageant since Fran is not Grace's mother, Grace does storm out from the pageant stating that she has no mother.
