Anouk Rosen is Aisha's best friend, a hot redhead and successful single executive, head script writer for a popular soap; she is also writing a novel. Anouk brings her boyfriend, Rhys, to the party; he is a 23 year old soap star hottie. On the morning before his big 4-0, Hector Sossidos awakens thinking about Connie; his wife is named Aisha. In the afternoon, Aisha is giving him a big party with family, his friends, her friends and the assorted children; Aisha has planned this party for months. Hector is Greek; Aisha is black; their two kids really resemble their mother. Hector is a civil servant and Aisha is a veterinarian; they have a bright, modern home and a good life. Connie is a young blonde who is Aisha's employee and also babysits the kids. The guests and friends at the party are an eclectic mix of races, cultures, political views and economic and success levels; this unleashes a powder keg. A game of cricket is organized for the kids, primarily to keep one of the kids out of the house and from destroying more of Hector's and his son, Adam's things. Slattery was retired but was still doing mediation work pro bono so the police begin investigating some of the clients who came to his home office. Slattery had recently pulled an old file from his storage facility in a 15 year-old divorce case. It leads them to a case of a medical partnership that may have been involved in deficient medical practices that led to the death of a 35 year-old woman, Maureen Gerard. It turns out two of the doctors used a new piece of equipment that had not yet been approved by the hospital and allowed a pharmaceutical sales rep to operate the equipment rather that a qualified nurse. The autopsy reveals that he was severely beaten. They learn that his father is in Attica and his mother is a drug addict - currently in rehab. He's been living in a foster home with some other boys of the same age. They first focus on the mother's former boyfriend but he has an alibi for the time when the boy was likely beaten. They then turn their attention to the two boys in the same foster home, particularly Chris Pollit, who has a previous conviction in juvenile court. ADA Stone decides to prosecute Chris as an adult, particularly when he learns the earlier offense had him shooting a store owner during a robbery.
