Martin tells Detectives Gilbough and Papania that back in 2002, Cohle started investigating something he wasn't aware of. Their last case as partners was that of Charmaine Boudreau who killed her child. Cohle gets a confession out of her but Martin thinks it contributed to his deteriorating condition. Cohle was in fact pursuing a lead about the Tuttle schools, an initiative to provide Christian education as an alternative to public schools. He learns that back in 1988, there had been accusations of child molestation at the school. Kelly, the girl he and Martin rescued from Reggie Ledoux in 1995, tells him of another man with scars who made her watch what they did to the boy who was held prisoner with her. Cohle is convinced that killings are going unreported or unconnected and that they simply didn't get everyone involved in the Dora Lang killing in 1995. Unable to make a deal with the Iron Crusaders, Cohle and Hart follows one of them to their meth cookhouse. Rather than call it in and request backup, they decide to raid the operation on their own. They face little resistance but after Hart finds two children living in abhorrent conditions, they kill the only two men they find there, one of whom is their main suspect Reggie Ledoux. Before the review board, they claim to have come under heavy fire and ended up fighting for their lives. In the process Reggie Ledoux and the other man were killed. They are commended for their bravery. Things subsequently got better for both of them, at least for a few years. Hart was promoted to Detective Sergeant and reconciled with his wife Maggie. Cohle received a commendation for bravery and got a girlfriend, Laurie. In 2002 however, Cohle gets information that the killer may not have been Ledoux. The detectives continue their search for Reggie Ledoux but an opportunity arises when Hart learns that Ledoux is cooking meth for a drug-dealing motorcycle gang known as the Iron Crusaders. Cohle knows them well having had dealings with the gang during the four years he worked as an undercover narcotics officer. He decides that the only way to move the case forward is to take two weeks of personal time - citing a dying father as the reason - and unofficially go undercover. He soon hooks up with his old contacts in the Iron Crusaders but it's clear that regaining their trust isn't going to be easy. At home meanwhile, Hart runs into major problems after his wife Maggie learns of his affair with Lisa. Cohle and Hart continue their investigation. They track down the minister who used the church but learn they had abandoned it some four months before it succumbed to fire. The local authorities blamed the fire on teenagers but it's still an open case. Cohle combs through old files searching for any connections to their current case. He may have found a 2-year-old case that appears similar, and sets out to find the dead girl's boyfriend, Reggie Ledoux, who has a record and knew Charlie Lange in prison. Maggie Hart sets Cohle up on a date and the four of them go to a bar where Martin sees his mistress Lisa out on a date with someone. They find the church she attended, now mostly burned out, but they also find something that links the church directly to their current case. Back at the office, they are faced with the prospect of being replaced by a task force. Cohle tells his partner he had a difficult time after his 2 year-old daughter was killed in a car accident. Some 17 years after they worked on a case together, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, then with the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division are re-interviewed about a case they worked together. They had only been partners for a few months when a naked woman's body was found in a farmer's field. She was posed kneeling before a tree with a crown of deer antlers on her head. The victim is identified as Dora Lange who, as Cohle had predicted, worked as a prostitute. Hart is a family man who does his best to get to know his new partner but Cohle reveals little of himself other than he is divorced and had a child who died. In the course of their investigation, they take an interest in another case, that of Marie Fontenot, a young girl who disappeared some time ago. They may have also found a link between the two cases.
