22 year old gay Jake Vickers, son of the chief superintendent, starts his first day as a police constable in Brighton, partnering the experienced Ryan Draper, a single father, who is unimpressed by Jake's handling of a suicidal drug addict and an hysterical shop-lifter, accusing the youngster of nepotism. Detectives Jo Moffat and Carl Hawkins investigate a racist attack but meet hostility from the chief witness, an Indian shop-keeper who feels let down by the police. However Jake redeems himself when he catches the main perpetrator, saving Ryan in the process.
