Lovejoy returns, penniless, from a year in Spain to find Tinker about to enter a monastery and Eric working as a security guard. Lady Jane introduces him to Victoria Cavero, widow of a South American politico who was investigating a group of corrupt bankers, possibly headed by Alfredo Pereira, who just happens to be in England. Victoria asks Lovejoy to sell an Inca ring for her but then Lady Jane is kidnapped in mistake for Victoria and the ring demanded as her ransom.
