Chick Farley is the pro at the local Pine Hills golf club. A onetime touring pro, Farley has made a lot of enemies. He's a boozer and a carouser, much to his wife Alma's regret, and he owes money to several members. He has his current job based on the reputation of Alma, who was an aspiring golfer herself but now drinks heavily. He wins the club's Invitation Tournament on a technical rule violation by Jim Harrell. The more junior pro at the club, Jim Harrell finds that $3000 worth of equipment is missing from the pro shop and he's sure it's a case of Farley pocketing the proceeds. However, he made the mistake of waiting two weeks to report the loss which makes Jim look guilt according to Chick. The club chairman would like nothing better than to see him fired and club member Irwin Brandt is tired of the constant passes he makes at his beautiful wife, Dina Brandt. Perry Mason defends Bruce Jay who is accused of killing his employer, Abner Gordon. Bruce had already spoken to Perry about $50,000 Abner owed him from an industrial accident some years before. The Gordon household is not a happy one. Abner Gordon was a crotchety old man who treated everyone around him very badly. He was constantly threatening to change his will and had only recently demanded that his niece, Rachel Gordon, who has spent 15 years of her life caring for him, return some money she had taken for her lover, Tracey Walcott. Abner's physician, Dr. Lambert, confirms the family situation to Perry. Rachel had a good deal of sympathy from the household staff including the butler, Charles Norman, and his wife, housekeeper Sadie Norman, as well as nurse Phyllis Clover. For some time now, Katherine Stewart has been visiting her husband Phillip every Wednesday in San Quentin prison who has been serving a year for involuntary manslaughter. He has been serving a term for killing his employer but for the last month, he has refused all visits from his wife. He is released on parole. Katherine consults Perry Mason and is at her wits end. She is now afraid that he will do something silly that sends him back to jail so she wants Perry to offer him a job on the east coast and get state approval for it.
