Nancy Banks hires Perry Mason to hold five $50 tickets she has from the local racetrack. The race hasn't been run yet and, should she win, she wants Perry to collect her winnings for her. Her horse comes in a winner and, when Perry and Della go to the track to collect the winnings, Perry is immediately accosted by Marvin Fremont and policeman Sgt. McClanahan, who claim that Nancy's brother, Rodney, stole the money from his business to buy the tickets and therefore the winnings are his. Perry isn't buying any of it and remains calm while Fremont accuses him of being a crooked lawyer. Rodney is in jail for stealing the money and, at Nancy's request, Perry arranges for his bail. Perry, however, is frustrated by his client's refusal to be honest with him. When Fremont is found murdered in her hotel room, however, it's Nancy who is charged with murder and Perry defends her. Sun and Sky, the horse favored to win the Kentucky Derby and possibly the Triple Crown, is being shipped to Kentucky to participate in the upcoming race. During the flight, however, all four members of the cargo plane's crew are overcome by some kind of drug, though the pilot manages to radio a distress call before losing consciousness. Mannix is hired by the insurance company holding the policy on the missing horse to investigate what happened. His search turns up the missing plane, and all four unconscious men, but not Sun and Sky. Mannix discovers that at least two of the men might have had a motive to steal the horse -- and then receives a confession from the horse's owners that they, too, are having financial problems that would make them suspects as well. The dying cattle won't cross the river or drink water because they are not thirsty because they lack salt in their diet because they have been traveling over and eating burnt-out grass. Tom Cowan, a newly hired one-armed drover tells Favor that there is an old rock salt mine at Murtry, owned by the local banker. Favor orders Cowan and some of the drovers to travel to Murtry to get the salt to feed the cattle. Cowan demurs, but Favor orders him to go along. We soon learn the reason for his reluctance: 10 years ago Cowan had just married Jenny Conway, local girl at Murtry. He robbed the local bank of $100 to buy a wedding trip, was caught by the law, but the despotic, controlling banker (Everett Sloane) offered him this deal which he accepted: go free, take $500, never return, and join the Army (at time of the Civil War) in the name of the banker's son.
